Top 30 Best Songs of 2006 (that I heard)

It's that time of year eh? This was the first time I did a year-end "best of" list and it was seriously hella hard to do. I wanted to do a top 10 but I couldn't fit in all the songs I loved this year. And then I kept finding new songs I felt should be on the list, so I revised and reordered like a million times (my OCD). Of course, there's bound to be a few gems that I missed. I’m happy with the final result though. It’s kind of eclectic, and heavily influenced by my beloved KCRW and their world-class stable of DJs.

The criteria for this list was 1) the overall beauty and spectacularness of the music, 2) how massive of a tune it was, 3) how many times I listened to it during the year(according to iTunes), 4) any interesting quirks about the song or artist that I found endearing, and 5) had to be released in 2006. It should be noted that my number one album of the year, “Live At The Planetarium” by I:Cube, is not represented anywhere on this list because it didn’t really have any songs – it was just one long, amazing live performance.

30.Fink – Pills In My Pocket

Notes: The biggest controversy for me was probably Nelly Furtado being knocked off the number one spot after I prematurely declared “Promiscuous” song of the year back in August. Also, I noticed there was very few house/progressive/trance songs at the top of the list, but a traffic jam of them near the bottom. That was a little weird, maybe a sign of my changing tastes. Fink rode a late surge of iTunes playtime to pip Wolfmother for the last spot. There are 2 covers on the list – Gecko Turner’s infectious Spanish guitar-laden version of the Bob Marley classic “Rainbow Country”, and Osunlade’s genre-defying take on Radiohead’s ode to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder “Everything In Its Right Place”. This year hailed the arrival of Bajka as my new favorite vocalist, and Miss Nine as the hottest DJ to ever grace the progressive house scene. This was also the first time I ever liked any musical recommendations from my sister Sarah – she told me about TV on the Radio and People In Planes.

It is good to see songs from Nelly Furtado and Pigeon John in your top 30 best songs you heard in 2006. I also love Pigeon John and I also love Promisicious.
