• Top 50 so far

    10 mars 2010, 11h19m

Always thought that my charts on last fm would only represent my true listening tastes once my Top 50 had at least 100 plays each.

Once my Top 50 got to 10 each I thought it would be fun to explain how I got around to first listening to a particular artist, my favourite release or something like that.

Also I am on a bit of a blues and blues rock habit at the moment so B.B. King, Albert King and Albert Collins are on their way to take over my top 50 in a big way.

    Not a bad list

    The Black CrowesWarpaint
    - Bought the new album in preparation for their performance at the Byron Bay Blues Fest. They did a great show. Luther Dickinson joined my top 5 list of guitarists I have seen/heard play live based on his solo sitting in with John Hiatt (which was simply amazing to hear) along with some brilliant solo work with the Black Crowes.

    RadioheadIn Rainbows
    - Videotape is my fave on this one.

Jimmy Page & The Black CrowesLive At The Greek
    - A great live CD

    Penny LanePenny Lane
-Out of left field for me. Penny Lane are a Polish Rock band who sing in their home language. Heard some samples as last fm recommendations and kept going back for more listens. Couldn't get CD locally off the shelf so went the iTunes way. I do not speak a word of Polish (except for Robert Kubica ;) ) but still enjoy their music

    - I get most stuff by these guys. Need to listen to it a few more times I think.

    Thirsty MercThirsty Merc

k.d. langHymns of the 49th Parallel
    - Saw a live performance of "Bird on a Wire" and was sold

    Jimmy BarnesOut In The Blue
Jimmy BarnesLive At The Playroom '84
    - Enjoying my Oz rock so got Jimmy's latest LP with a bonus live album thrown in

The WhitlamsTruth, Beauty and a Picture of You

ATFirst Act - Chapter 2 EP

    Neil YoungSilver and Gold
    - Some acoustic Neil. Needs a few more listens though.

    Pink FloydThe Division Bell
    - Had this once and sold it. Bought it back again to see if it has got any better. Will probably keep this one. I prefer "A Momentary lapse of Reason" to this one out of the non-Roger Waters Floyd.

    The Saints(I'm) Stranded
    - Was reading "Pig City", a book about the Brisbane local music scene amongst other stuff and thought I better get this one

    The VinesMelodia
    - Like their stuff and went to see them live at the Tivoli.

    Various ArtistsBrisbane Sounds

-Compilations of local bands with a good mix of stuff

Most of the CDs on this list were bought on special (usu. from JB Hifi) as I hate spending more than I need to on my music.

So there is a lot of back catalogue stuff here.

Am enjoying catching up with a lot of stuff I never got around to when it first came out though.

My top three out of the list above in no particular order would be:

  • From AC/DC to instro surf ... eventually aka A Musical Journey

    15 jan. 2008, 6h42m

Here are my musical meanderings over the last few weeks:

I bought myself AC/DC - For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) a few weeks ago and loved it as I knew I would.

Throw in a listen to AC/DC's similar artists on which gave me a listen to ZZ Top's track Just Got Back From Baby's which I had never heard before. Have to say that I loved the track.

ZZ Top led me to give my Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray discs or at least a couple of them a spin. Anders Osborne and Jimmie Vaughan also got a look in as well.

Throw in some Oscar Peterson Trio via the LP Night Train and a trip to the local library which allowed me to listen to a Howard Arlen songbook double CD on Verve, two Jimmy Smith discs, a Blue Note compilation or two, some Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Manu Dibango, a concert by The Marsalis Family and some early Sonny Rollins.

Don't usually like the sound quality of stuff recorded before 1950 or thereabouts but thought the Woody Herman stuff was great. The Jimmy Smith cds were also great. House Party and Dot Com Blues

So thats how I got from ACDC to Jazz.

All of this was happening along my usual rock stuff as well as some Peter Bjorn and John

Now for the Instro surf ...

I know it's mainly rock to blues to jazz above but usually I move next to instro surf such as The Aqua Velvets or plain instro such as The Shadows

Now if I could only stop going to the library...

That's another lot of journals altogether.

Feel free to post your recent musical journeys as well

  • 17 tracks per day

    31 déc. 2007, 14h33m

Just gone 17 tracks per day !!!
Went from 16 to 17 in quick time

    Going for 20
Gotta love holiday time to crank up the listening

Starting to listen to lots of jazz at the moment after feeding my rather small collection of jazz into my ipod

The local library cd collection has taken a beating as well .. may discuss my finds there in a separate post

Prob discuss my jazz faves in another journal as well

    Woody Herman
    Jimmy Smith
  • 16 tracks per day Woo hoo

    21 déc. 2007, 2h04m

    16 tracks per day

It may not be a big deal to some last fm people but I have been working hard on raising my tracks played per day ever since my ipod died some months ago.

When the previous ipod was cracking up/broken I think it got down as low as 11 per day back mid year sometime which is pitiful.

have had a new ipod since sept and have just yesterday got my tracks per day up to 16. Yee ha !!!

Can't have my ipod on at work so can't really aspire to playing 80 per day or something like that like some people on here

Will be giving it a crack over the holiday period though

maybe I need to find a job where i can listen to my ipod when I'm working.

    Sounds like a plan ;)

  • Bob Dylan

    28 jui. 2007, 11h58m

My Bob Dylan collection got a bit of a boost this week in preparation for his upcoming show in Brisbane on Aug 13.

Up until a couple of days ago my Dylan collection consisted of :

    Bob Dylan - Oh Mercy
Bob Dylan - Another Side Of Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan - The Essential (2cd)
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Bob Dylan - Time out of Mind

Over the last few days the following have been added to give the collection a bit of a boost.

Only proviso in buying was that it had to be (a) a Bob Dylan CD (duh) and (b) be priced under ten bucks.

So here are the additions of the last few days (with one or two more shops to go tomorrow)

Bob Dylan - The Times They are a-changin'
Bob Dylan - Pat Garrett @ Billy the Kid
    Bob Dylan - Empire Burlesque
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
    Bob Dylan - New Morning
    Bob Dylan - Modern Times
    Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan
    Bob Dylan - Hard Rain
Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
    Bob Dylan - Planet Waves
Bob Dylan And the Grateful Dead - Dylan and The Dead

Still a lot more to go I know but the additions above should keep me busy listening for a while yet.

I think I need to get the whole lot now !!! May just be hooked !!

  • My iPod broke

    11 avr. 2007, 10h52m

    Hi All,

My Photo iPod is in the repair shop after a couple of frustrating weeks of not being able to trust it to play without freezing.

I used to use the currently busted ipod for 99% of my music listening at home in the car everywhere so it definitely has been a frustrating time with less music going on in my life.

The busted iPod is why there are so few tracks getting played at the moment.

Fingers crossed they can fix it or otherwise I'll have to shell out for a new one of some sort.

In other news my band Upsize are about to launch our debut CD West End Delicacy ... so if you live in Brisbane come along to this gig UPSIZE CD Launch for West End Delicacy ... It's on this week April 14 in

Also if you like Upsize then please tag us as whatever style you like but please add the location tags and .
