Best Songs of 2007

1. All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem
A no brainer, All My Friends is without a doubt LCD Soundsystem's magnum opus. The song starts off simple and then snowballs into a climax that makes your heart beat faster.

2. Fake Empire - The National
Fake Empire, the opening track to The National's 2007 album, Boxer is the best track on the album. Fake Empire starts off with bouncing piano chords in 3/4, then in comes Matt Berninger low penetrating voice that will pound Fake Empire into your head.

3. To Build a Home - The Cinematic Orchestra
To Build a Home is the beautiful opening or closing track (depending on the US or UK release) on 2007's Ma Fleur. The song beings with haunting sustained piano chords complemented with Patrick Watson's melodic voice. The nostalgic tone of the song, which is about reflecting on life in old age, mixes the lyrics and music together fantastically.

4. Scythian Empire - Andrew Bird
Scythian Empire is the best song featuring whistling this year (yes it is better than the irritating Young Folks). Fingerpicking, and marching percussion topped with the surrouding vocals, make Scythian Empire the best muscial lesson of history of 2007

5. Four Winds - Bright Eyes
Four Winds is the best cut off Bright Eyes' only 2007 release, Cassadaga. The provocative lyrics about religion placed over a swarm of guitars, drums, fiddles, organs, and steel pedals are a leading addition to Bright Eyes' impressive catalogue.

6. Woozy With Cider - James Yorkston
Normally I don't like spoken word songs. Woozy with cider is haunting door into the mind of James Yorkston. Softly spoken over a soft synth line, Yorkston's lyrics explain his curiosity about the future, and paint a picture of Yorkston's thoughts.

7. My Favourite Book - Stars
My Favourite Book is a happy love song with bubbly bass, woodwinds, and the perfect amount of cooed 'cuckoo's'.

8. Sleeping Lessons - The Shins
The leadoff track starts with an atmospheric synth line that transforms into a guitar riff then into one of the most exciting moments on the entire 2007 album, Wincing the Night Away.

9. Lake Michigan - Rogue Wave
Lake Michigan is a swirling waltz that's one of the most catchy songs of year.

10. Intervention - Arcade Fire
Intervention is the clear standout on 2007's Neon Bible. The reverb drenched organ, joined by strummed guitars and glockenspiels provide a beautiful setting before the bass and drums drive the song to a explosion of sonic bliss.

11. Old News - Dr. Dog
This tune of Dr. Dog's great 2007 release We All Belong is amazing two minutes of bass, piano, drums, and guitar. The key lyric "It's so easy to dream, but so hard to say goodnight" is all too true.
