I didn’t listen to music much as a child. Mostly I had only one album at one time which I listened to, but not too often even that. It all changed in the beginning of 2005, when I saw music video of Children of Bodom’s Needled 24/7. It was love at the first glance. I fell in love with the aggression of the song, liking it that it sounded melodic at the same time. It took few months when I bought my first metal album, which was (surprise, surprise) Hate Crew Deathroll by Children of Bodom. First I slowly added some other metal bands to my catalog like Slipknot, Bullet for My Valentine, In Flames and Trivium. I still like most of the bands I discovered back then.
2006 – Last.fm
The first seven months were pretty much similar to the year 2005. The event that has occurred to my music taste most occurred in August when I registered to last.fm. Being a member in last.fm community has given me the ability to specify my taste to what I really like, because I found a myriad of bands I had never even heard of before. Quite quickly I found bands like Mors Principium Est, Kalmah, Amon Amarth and Skyfire with the help of last.fm. Already here it was quite clear that my favourite genre will be melodic death metal.
2007-2009 – The specification of my taste
During these years I’ve found a lot of great bands. What’s funny most of my discoveries were somehow related to the last.fm. Either they were recommended by last.fm itself, or some of my friends I’ve found in last.fm recommended them. It became clearer and clearer that melodic death metal is my thing through finding such bands as Blind Stare, Be’lakor, MyGrain, Noumena and Zonaria. Some other genres became favourites too. Folk metal, especially when it has lot in common with melodeath like it is with bands as Ensiferum, Eluveitie and Equilibrium. Metalcore, where the combination of aggression and melody is also there. Favourites from that genre are Unearth, Neaera, As I Lay Dying and August Burns Red. And also some melodic black metal sounded good to me. Graveworm, Catamenia and Dimmu Borgir kept that flag up.
2010 – Rise of Moonsorrow
Even though I found a multitude of awesome bands during the years, I never found a standout band. A band I would have listened to hours in a row. Not until last year, when I discovered Moonsorrow. I sure had heard them before but it never worked. But now when I finally gave them time, I finally found the awesomeness in their music. There is no other band that can make 15-minute songs sound so short. I purchased all their albums during the year and with each album I began to like them more and more. I can say again that I have a favourite band, last time was with Children of Bodom in 2005-06.
2011 - …and what’s to come
Already at this point I can say that this is going to be the best year in new music for me. Growing library combined with the fact that many of my favourite bands release an album in 2011 will make it happen. Awesome new albums made by Moonsorrow, myGrain and Omnium Gatherum are just a beginning. Despite that the year is only 3 months old I’ve already discovered many promising new bands such as Entrope, Dreamshade, Draugnim and In Grief. So there is no reason to stop here, but to keep expanding my library also in the future.
I’d like to give special thanks to following people:
Philip (no current profile at last.fm)
Also thanks to everyone who have recommended me new music during the years. Keep doing that in the future too. :)
50 000th song (randomly picked): Evemaster – Disgraceful
Evemaster is a band that has been in my library for many years, but I never have got excited about them even though they make good music. Maybe this is a sign to make acquaintance with the more accurately.
