I just picked up Shuggie Otis' Freedom Flight on vinyl recently. What a crime that Shuggie Otis doesn't get the recognition he deserved. His career never really took off despite his obvious talents exhibited in many a blistering guitar solo. Shuggie is probably best remembered for turning down a touring slot in the Rolling Stones, which probably wasn't the best career move one could make. However, this album has him at his creative peak, easily jumping genres from rock to funk to R&B and more. It is tough to find a funkier song than Icecold Daydream. Also on this album is the tune Strawberry Letter #23 whose best known version was taken to the top of the charts by The Brothers Johnson. Ultimately, Shuggie only released a handful of albums after getting a reputation as being hard to work with. Luckily, we have this album as a testament to his talents.
