Sat 5 Nov – Frampton Comes Alive 35 Years Tour - An Evening with Peter
I'd really been looking forward to this gig as I've grown up with the Comes Alive album (I was 16 when it came out) and I have to say it was great to hear the music live.
The band are OK… keyboard player Rob Arthur is no Bob Mayo, not reproducing some of the more dextrous work on the original album, but still providing some good stuff. Guitarist Adam Lester provided a perfectly adequate rythm to Frampton's lead, and the bass and drums were solid.
The first half of the show (nearly two hours) saw the whole Comes Alive album played in its entirety, the only difference being 'Lines on My Face' featuring as the third song rather than the second to last.
Highlights for me were the aforementioned song, Shine On (some mad guitar from both players), All I Want To Be (ably helped by the enthusiastic audience), the acoustic Penny for Your Thoughts and, of course, Do You Feel Like We Do (one of rock's legendary songs.)
The second half (hour) of the show featured newer stuff.
Visually the concert was disappointing. Projections onto a square screen behind the band featured, first, a pastiche of photos of Peter from the 70's; understandable since this was a celebration of 35 years. Then there were coloured bubbles which, frankly, looked like they'd been done in someone's kitchen sink. 'Do You Feel' and 'Like We Do' flashed up on the screen, but out of sync with the music… Maybe these were teething troubles as this was the first concert of the European leg but surely we could have expected something a little more polished…
Overall, 5/10 for the show, 8/10 for the music; an overall 7/10.
