Mr Grant sure is one of life's survivors! His solo effort is just sublime, a whole confluence of different sounds and influences, Nick Drake, The Carpenters, Neil Young...but most of all even in moments of high melodrama he has a rather brilliant knack of interspersing his brand of wry and black humour. An album that is certainly greater than the sum of his parts. (My apologies if this sounds like an over-written music review ;) Oh and I hope you are well!

Jonas, just a quick recommendation for you. If you haven't done so yet, you should steal a listen to John Grant's "Queen of Denmark"; It really is quite accomplished. http://www.raggedwords.com/reviews/album-reviews/john-grant-queen-denmark

Hey Jonas! Hope you are hale and hearty now that spring has sprung this neck of the woods - just dropping by to post this link to a BBC 2 Radio documentary on the great Jacques Brel - I think you'll like it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00rq2pn

Jonas, forgive me - the hypocrisy of my last post has just come and slapped me four-square in my face. There I am listening to Jacques Brel, the great man himself, singing in Flemish - cute but very badly intoned Flemish according to my ex Flemish housemate (now relocated from Ireland to New Zealand, the Ireland of the Southern Hemisphere, well more Ireland on steroids...) and there I was preaching about poor Martha! I don't know; what am I like...just thought I'd share....Heehee

AAARGH! I gave up a trip to Berlin, comforting myself with the London junket, which left me waking up in the middle of the night freaked out by the sound of a Banshee like figure cowering over me with a voice that has all the beauty of a cat being strangled in slow motion! And to think that I could have been flouncing around Prenzlauerberg in search of a Teutonic muse! Yeah the Martha gig could rock, that is if she slows down and concentrates on the songs. She has all the ability of nailing these songs but in my experience she can lack a certain finesse with the French lyrics (especially if she thinks the audience won't notice) but she does not reckon on a fair-haired Milord in the audience...apt to pounce in the presence of shoddy intonation! HAHAHA. I share your assessment of the Leonard Cohen cover album but Nick Cave's Suzanne deserves praise (actually Alain Bashung RIP has a great cover in French). ROCK ON (in a low-fi, post rock, pscychedelic kind of way) Jonas!

Overall, a night out in København would have been decidedly more fun I reckon (a least you don't get appalling Diamanda Galas flashbacks)....You know Martha Wainwright plays next month at the aforementioned venue with her version of Piaf songs - I have a feeling this will be good as she brings her own style to the lesser known Piaf songs while still retaining a good ability to communicate the emotion and sentiment inherent therein. I doubt she'll arrive on stage in a little black dress with a melancholic air about her and un verre d'absinthe nearby! I guess it is a very delicate balance when one attempts to pay hommage in some way to the old greats of the French music scene - covers can either come across as far too pastiche (trop franco-francais) or so removed from the original the song is unrecognisable. Well there you go Mister - you were better off keeping your money in your back pocket. The very best to you Sir! Chris.

Hey Jonas! Gosh, where do I begin??? Well Brel at the Barbican was interesting I'll give you that! Maybe I am too much of a Brel purist to enjoy these tribute style performances but it became very apparent very quickly that some of the artists would be better off not attempting any more Brel songs, EVER! Diamanda Galas in a way stole the show with her very very unique performance of La Chanson des vieux amants followed by Amsterdam. Jonas I swear she might as well have just taken a hatchet to the piano, the resulting sounds would have been better. Moreover I think her shrieking has caused me permanent hearing damage! Flying the flag for the aul sod Camille O'Sullivan a seasoned cabaret artiste rendered a faithful version of Marieke, nor did Marc Almond let himself down. Scott Walker is the only one as far as I can see who can communicate the passion, poetry and pathos inherent in the music of Brel, despite the rather shoddy English translations.

Summer vacation is only beginning for me Jonas although despite the rest of Europe suffering with excess heat it is from a heavy, humid, damp isle that I write. Yeah, I agree with your assessment of Of Montreal....saw them back in January and there was just something missing...can't put my finger on it but the gig was mediocre...it didn't help being surrounded by 19 year-olds cloned fresh from Urban Outfitters and American Apparel. Still must have been interesting putting them up - you must have all been caught up in a haze of lysergic bliss...geddit??? boum...boum:) I'll be spreading my wings soon with a few European junkets planned. How goes the teaching? Guess you are still on break - anyhow nice to hear from the footballing poet again. Best wishes...C

Hey there Jonas! Just passing to say hello - hope all is well with you. I must pen you a little ditty soon with some news. You still have rockin' taste and I note Brel among your listened to tracks - sublime. The very best to you and yours, C.
