Recently I saw a small program aired on VH1 called something along the lines of the "100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs". Needless to say, as expected, their list was awful. I seriously threw up in my mouth after I finished watching the program. Witness the atrociousness for yourself with the below link:
The entire VH1 list can be found here.
My main problem with the list was Welcome to the Jungle hailing the #1 spot, and Def Leppard as well as Twisted Sister netting top 10 spots on the countdown. Absolutely embarrassing. Anyways VH1 made me so angry that I decided to make an ACTUAL top 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs. You'll notice that my criteria of "hard rock" is very broad.

Don't Fear the Reaper and Stairway to Heaven are both very much hard rock. Not as heavy as other songs on the list, but still are hard rock. BOC doesn't have any other songs that are top 100 caliber aside from maybe Burnin' for You and Godzilla.

Both songs still have a very heavy sound, though, so I consider them hard rock. Also you're just an extreme BOC fanboy. For instance, i'm an AC/DC fanboy, and they only managed to have 3 songs on my list despite my wanting to put more on it (for instance Thunderstruck and Hells Bells WERE both on there, but I replaced both with Beck's bolero and Slow Ride respectively as I felt both songs deserved spots on the list more). The same case is for BOC songs. Slow Ride is much greater and more important than anything else BOC recorded. Like I said Burnin' for You barely escaped making the list but got beat out by various other songs.

I don't really follow how your list would be endlessly better than VH1's. Sure, it has more of my fave's, but most artists appear in both lists. It's just that VH1 doesn't have videos for all those songs, so you can be pissed at VH1 all you want, but their hands are kindof tied.

This list is pretty horrible actually, sure I like some of these bands, but you're not giving enough credit to any of the 5 greatest rock bands. Yes, Led Zeppelin should be in the top 3, but for Stairway? Come on man... Maybe for Kashmir or Immigrant Song. And how is Achilles Last Stand not on this list whatsoever? I also agree that Welcome to the Jungle shouldn't be on the top, but GNR is another of the greatest hard rock bands, and should have a song in the top 3 as well. Civil War should be at the top of the list IMO, but that's just my opinion right. Either Hells Bells or Back in Black should round out the top 3, then Voodoo Child (Slight Return), not Purple Haze, at 4, and the original Stones version of Sympathy for the Devil at number 5. Now that's some hard rock for you.

By the way, if you think BÖC doesn't have anything else worthy of the top 100 list, you must not have heard The Red and The Black. And I missed Black Dog when I was mentioning the Zep songs that should get a top 3 spot over Stairway, and also just noticed that Ram Jam's Black Betty is nowhere on this list. A list of the greatest rock songs without Black Betty anywhere on it isn't much of a list IMO.

Number one was sort of an anticlimax, but the list overall was pretty good.

Yeah, No.1 was a surprise, great song but I don't think You Really Got Me is hard rock at all! I think there are quite a few songs that aren't [or maybe we just have different definitions of hard rock] but it's still an awesome rockin' list! Nice variety of bands - beatles to pistols to clash to nirvana =)

I have seen several of these lists, and cannot help but wonder if people who have the compulsion to post lists are not a bit off their nut. How, I repeat, how can a Hard Rock list not include Soundgarden and Tool? This list is more like a Top 100 Hard Rock Songs That Were Played On The Radio A Lot And I Get Nostalgic About list.

Tool is metal, right? (for DarkViperd00d) And yeah, lists will always have pro's and cons... There is no perfect one. And i bet VH1 didnt take into account the taste of die hard hard rock fans, they just adapt their list to match it with the taste of all the sheep.

i may be a little out of my league here by not actually being born in the time period, and by preferring classic rock, but i really don't think this list is a very good representation of hard rock
