Decent Bands That Time Forgot Vol. 3

22 jan. 2007, 15h42m

This week I am writing about an extremely influential band, that only ever released one album: Temple of the Dog.

TOTD were a tribute band formed after the death of Mother Love Bone's singer Andy Wood's death.

Temple of the Dog comprised of Wood's former roommate and close friend Chris Cornell, with Mother Love Bone bassist Jeff Ament, guitarist Stone Gossard, future Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron.

The band released their only album, the self titled Temple of the Dog on April 16, 1991, simultaneously releasing Hunger Strike.

For your viewing pleasure, here's the video to Hunger Strike:

Along with Cornell, Eddie Vedder provides guest vocals for Hunger Strike. Vedder had flown to Seattle to audition for the role of Pearl Jam's singer. Cornell was apparently having difficulty with the vocals for the track, and Vedder stepped up to fill in.

Cornell Later said that "he sang half of that song not even knowing that I'd wanted the part to be there and he sang it exactly the way I was thinking about doing it, just instinctively."

Vedder joined Ament, Gossard and McCready to form Pearl Jam (along with drummer Dave Abruzzi), although Soundgarden dummer Matt Cameron would join them over 5 years later upon Soundgarden's split in April 1997.

If you've ever been a fan of Pearl Jam, Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Mudhoney and any other Seattle grunge band... you really should pay homage to Temple of the Dog.

More to come next week in my "Decent bands that time forgot" series. :D
