Not much is new really, haven't been around here much the last week or so because of bullshit USB ports not working. Everything's pretty much the same around the palringo people's neck of the woods, besides Madliberator not being there much anymore. How's it been going for you?

What's good! Right now, my life is okaaaaaay. Not looking for a pity parade or anything but I've spent the last few days writing up an essay (that I really should have started two weeks ago) under a cold and the weather here (in Ireland) is so bad that I'm actually mentioning the weather, which you just don't normally do! I've fallen behind once again in terms of what's bubbling in hip-hop. I was exploring some west coast underground shit around the new year but now I'm just going off the boil because of work...

I've been listening to a lot of worldwide hip-hop lately and just thought I'd drop by to rec you an album by a Japanese hip-hop group, Rip Slyme. This outfit isn't instrumental or a collective of turntablists - it's four mcs and a dj! Don't know if you're fluent in Japanese (I sure as hell ain't) but I think you'll dig 'Talkin Cheap'. Imagine a more blunted out, heavy Digable Planets and you have Talkin' Cheap's sound. Assuming you haven't heard of this act of course...

Do you think RA Scion alienates some listeners due to his vocabulary and diction? Not every hip hop listener has the kind of verbiage to comprehend his lyrics...On 40 Thieves in the comments people are collectively attempting to discern the meaning from song. Also, from a technical standpoint, do you think using multi-syllabic words in your rhymes makes it easier to well...rhyme? Because you can use only a part of the word and still make it rhyme...idk dumb question probably. The song (go back a few pages): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWPeqJcuAHg

I don't think they're really alike in personality tbh. But that's just who I imagine. Brother Jack actually just turns out to be a deceitful fraud with seemingly well-intentions who masquerades as a concerned white man who wants the best for the black community and plans to end forms of prejudice with his organization, the Brotherhood. (run on sentence? woop woop!) The protagonist, who is black, trusts Jack and ends up being betrayed when the Brotherhood stands idly by while riots ravage Harlem. That is revealed to be their intentions all along, and two conflicting ideologies, the one of a black nationalist named Ras the Extorter and Jack's are understood to be one and the same. The abstract ideology of Brother Jack and the extremist vision of Ras are both equally iniquitous.

I liken Brother Jack in Invisible Man to Brother Ali. That's just who pops into my head when I visualize him. kbaithxfornotblockingmeh

Shoutout to EzioKiller9595! I see that guy everywhere on YouTube. On DEHH vids, on just random hip hop vids. Shoutout to ToneRiggz! He's on UGHH, DEHH as well, MisAnthropikOne's videos, etc. Idk why I'm shouting out these shoutouts in your shoutbox, but you could make me feel less idiosyncratic by saying you also see these names in a lot of places.

Funny you should mention Del because I've had him on my mind the last day or two. I wasn't really listening to any of his music just musing on where he'd end up if I had a top 100 mc's list - yup, that's what I spend my days thinking about! Probably be top 30 at least. I love dude's accent - that Oakland twang. Future Development, though not his best album, is my favorite of his - I adore X-Files. I can't envisage any rapper sounding as good as Del when he gets the right production. To be honest, I like a lot of Bay Area rappers when it comes to delivery and cadence. E-40 for instance - might not be to everyone's taste but that dude can rap his ass off and then some...

You were spot on about Common in one of your questions. Completely agree about Electric Circus (even though I think you went a tad hard on it) - it lacks direction.

The fundamental flaw: too much going on in one album. That being said, I think I gave it a hard time initially - like if it didn't meet my expectations or be what it should have been I'd mentally discard it...

Still think it's one of his worst albums but with a few more listens I''ve warmed towards some of the production (flawed as it is). I think the different sections and switching loops in the beats for A Queens Story and The Don actually save the overall production style from banality, giving the tracks another dimension - The Don sounds like an anthem to me now - as opposed to a radio freestyle over a cheap beat. I just wish I could hear a proper bassline...
