  • Exclusive Moby mix coming to Chill

    29 juin 2009, 21h59m

You know what it's like to get emails that look too good to be true? I
don't normally follow them up (how many lotteries can I really win in a
week?) but last week I heard from Moby's team, asking if he could make
us an exclusive mix for us to play on Chill.

A couple of "is this for real?!" conversations later, and it's on the way!

We've always been big fans of the man whose first albums became a widely
used soundtrack to everything cool, and shaped the sound of music people
make to chill with today. Since "I Like to Score", "Play" and "18", Moby
got more into experimenting with bands and live shows - I've seen a few,
they've been very good - but I always wondered when he might get back to
the kind of soundscapes that inspired us and helped create Chill.

He has a new album "Wait for Me" which, I think, does just that - and
Moby is going to include some of those tunes + lots of other artists
    which help him chill.

You can hear Moby's exclusive mix for Chill on Sunday 5th July at 9pm -
hope you can chill with us then!

  • Arctic Circle Radio - new on Chill tonight (and online any time!)

    26 mai 2009, 16h29m

I am very excited that we have TWO brand new shows starting tonight on Chill. They have been a very long time in the making, under the careful craftsmanship of Chiller Cabinet maker Ben Eshmade.

Ben has been working with chilled artists to produce unique events called "Arctic Circle" for some years now, and he has been finding amazing soundtracks and songs along the way.

The music is all beautiful, but some didn't quite fit the Chiller Cabinet. In fact, it is so varied that it didn't really fit one show at all - so Ben made two:

"The Hut" (Tuesdays 10pm, Friday night/Saturday morning midnight) - here is how Ben describes it: "A weekly velvety soft sonic celebration brought to you by Arctic Circle Radio. The Hut is a refuge, a cocoon of the finest in new music, spinning a warm glow from the outer-reaches of the snowy wastelands. Presented and produced by Ben Eshmade (with additional sounds and magic from Sone Institute), the Hut is a one-hour transmission from an intensely beautiful musical world."

"The Circle" (Tuesdays 11pm, Friday night/Saturday morning 1am) - "Brought to you by Arctic Circle Radio, the Circle is a new weekly pad-cast that takes you on a one-hour journey based on the most simple and significant of shapes. Every Circle is unique; formed from a guest curator’s musical landscape and they all share the same revolutionary quality: each one ends at the point where it began."

One of the best things about these new shows is that Ben has put in the hard work with artists and labels to let you hear them online at any time, and even download them as free podcasts.

To see the tracklists and get the shows for yourself, join Ben at http://www.jointhecircle.net/radio

The Chiller Cabinet remains on Chill, Thursdays 10pm and Saturday night/Sunday morning at midnight.

Please let us know what you think of the music - I hope it helps you chill with us tonight!

  • A new place to share what helps you chill

    8 mai 2009, 13h05m

It's new! It's our fastest growing thing! I'm so excited about it, I dropped sticky food on my exclamation mark key!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (etc)

www.helpyouchill.com is a new site we have set up for Chill listeners and fans to share what helps them chill. It's different from all of our other pages, because everyone who joins gets their OWN page to fill up with the stuff which helps them chill - music, photos, videos, words... If it helps you chill, you can share it there (with obvious common sense rules about copyright... if you own it or can use it under Creative Commons licence, great! If not, you can always link to other sites that legally host your favourite stuff, so it's all good!)

We're just getting started, but already there are a couple of dozen tunes posted by listeners. You can read more on our music page.

    Hope to see you there!

  • Behind the scenes at Chill on BBC1 !

    30 avr. 2009, 20h06m

    Lights! Camera! Action! And... sing!!??

Chill gets a feature this coming Sunday on BBC1, and you will never guess what programme it's on...

Songs of Praise has a Bristol special this weekend, and I had the pleasure of being interviewed for it. They were looking for Bristol-based Christians working in the media, and it turns out they also loved Chill when they heard it. So I took them around the studios where we put things together, they filmed me making a podcast, we chatted about how Chill works, and how life, work and faith fit together for me.

They also filmed lots of singing - that being the "Songs of Praise" bit - so look out for me trying to work out what's going on among a crowd of very well rehearsed top singers from across Bristol. (I didn't actually know any of the tunes - they were quite fancy and jazzy... my church is a bit more into the Hillsong pop-rock thing.)

So set your vidz for Sunday 3 May, 5.55pm, in between Points of View and Last of the Summer Wine. (The schedule really hasn't changed since the 80s, has it?!)

    "Showbiz" luv,

  • Thanks - and update

    31 mars 2009, 10h59m

Thank you for all of your messages about the corrupted audio tracks which were causing so much lack of chill on Chill! By all accounts we seem to have dealt with most of them now - I've picked up lots from your emails while scanning through the affected audio server (over 10,000 tracks in all - and I've checked nearly 9,000 of them so far) There are still a few to go, and it might be that some of those tracks which only play rarely have a few surprises in them, so keep letting us know if you hear anything awry - chill@helpmechill.com

I've also updated my Simplecity page with last night's playlist - sorry for the delay, and thanks again for the requests! It's at www.simplecity.org

Now - back to my headphones...!

  • What's with the static bursts ***KKSSSHHH*** on Chill?

    23 mars 2009, 17h46m

I feel like I'm getting full on humble pie today. You may have heard some bad audio problems on Chill in the last couple of weeks, and I need to explain and ask for your help.

Recently the audio servers which contain our vast collection of chilled tunes had a very un-chilled day. They broke. The engineers in our building did a brilliant job of keeping Chill on air, and we ran with a shorter playlist for a few days. Then we had great news - they had restored the audio from the servers, so we could go back to normal... or so we thought.

It turns out that a very small percentage of the tracks which were restored were also corrupted. Some of them very, very noticeably. It's been taking a while to spot them all and take the offenders off air. I'm currently working through just over ten thousand audio files, and while we do this, you're probably noticing the tracks on Chill which I'm missing while I'm glued to this machine!

So I would love some help. If you hear a track which sounds like it has a weird burst of static in (probably less than a second long, but it might repeat several times...), it's probably OUR equipment that's at fault, and not your radio! Could you email me at chill@helpmechill.com and let me know either the track name (if you recognise it or can see it on screen), or the precise time you heard it? This will help us get the offending tracks replaced quickly, so we can get back to helping you chill!

For everyone who has emailed so far, THANK YOU! It's great to hear from you. I know you don't like complaining - just know that getting in touch helps the whole Chill community, and we are very grateful.

In the words of the late great Douglas Adams, "we will be restoring normality just as soon as we are sure about what is normal anyway."

    Best wishes,
    Bern
