  • My Eclectic Score

    25 nov. 2013, 3h11m

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php

  • Another Wonderful Newport Folk Festival

    2 août 2010, 18h06m

Fri 30 Jul – Newport Folk Festival

This festival never disappoints. While there were no huge names this year, all the performers were solid. I was very disappointed with Andrew Bird, however. He is very talented, no doubt, but he is no entertainer and found myself easily distracted. Sharon Jones easily stole the show for me. She is one amazing performer. The Dapper Kings were fantastic. On Saturday, I loved Calexico. I found the Avett Brothers to be very uneven, but maybe it was because the terribly annoying woman behind me who wouldn't stop blabbering while professing her love of the Avett Brothers. Richie Havens was precious. I cannot wait until next year!

Musically, I have been examining a lot of the music I grew up with and reclaiming it. It is ridiculous that I won't listen to songs I like because they are not cool. I'm too old for that crap. Personally, everything is on track for a fresh start. :)
  • Jeff Taylor and Happy Anarchy in NYC

    13 sept. 2008, 17h44m

Sat 6 Sep – Happy Anarchy, Nanuchka, Jeff Taylor, The Prigs, Matt Lowell

I was only able to catch Jeff Taylor and Happy Anarchy. I did not know Jeff and overall I found him/them enjoyable. Jeff is a very dynamic and fun guy to watch on stage. The music was pretty uneven, however. A few times I wondered how long the band has been together. They seem to miss queues and sometimes seem to be on different pages. The song structure was rather odd. Once they got going the song ended abruptly.

Happy Anarchy were clearly on a different league. They were very tight and seemed to have a lot of fun together, as did their audience. Although you can't tell by audiences that seem to be comprised of family and friends. I liked their mix of songs and energy. If I get a chance, I'd go see them again.
