r&b is basically modern soul-pop music. rhythm and blues is described above. r&b is what people who listened to disco or funk in the 70s would listen to now. rhythm and blues i think is the jazz and blues styles that gave way to rock n roll and soul. r&b is a term that describes pop music especially after funk and disco dominance. thats my take on it.

@LaszloBartok ‘It's sad Beyonce and Big Joe Turner actually have the same tag.’ I don’t think they do. Look at the weighting of the ‘rhythm and blues’ tag for Beyonce: it’s at the same font as ‘latin’. And, Big Joe Turner’s ‘rnb’ and ‘r&b’ are the same as ‘beach music’.

a comment on these comments: ‘rhythm and blues’ does not mean the same thing as ‘R&B’ as evidenced by a comparison of the tags ‘rnb’ and ‘R&B’ with ‘rhythm and blues’ (despite the origin of the abbreviations). So, they are different semantic categories. Perhaps using different labels is a sign of respect for the older musicians. That is, using separate labels distances the new from the old so that whatever ‘disgracing’ that’s going down is clearly not a reflection on the beautiful thing called ‘rhythm and blues’.
