'pop' and 'indie' may seem contradictory, but i see it that 'indie' as an abbreviation of 'independent' originally referred to the music label (and thus type) the artist was signed on. 'Pop' does indeed come from 'popular', and while most things that are 'popular' are indeed different from 'small, obscure, eccentric' that doesn't necessarily make the terms mutually exclusive. if it makes you feel better, pretend 'pop' refers to the bubble in soda-pop. its happier indie. @ELMNTzero: you are confused. pop is not a synonymous of "mainstream". pop is usually something melodic, easy to listen to, not necessarily mainstream, it can be also underground.

"independent" and "pop" are NOT oxymorons, at least as far as music goes. all it means to be an independent band is that you're NOT on a label affliated with any of the big three (formerly four) major labels. there are plenty of independent labels that are large enough to release a popular record. that's all besides the point though - pop has come to describe a particular sound more than the degree of popularity. so indie pop is certainly a legitimate tag/genre.

Stupid tag. Its a contradiction. Indie usually means underground, independent from major labels, etc. Pop is popular music, that is mainstream to please a general audience, usually with the help of major labels.
