With their newest album, dance duo YACHT have created the funkiest dystopia ever imagined, and a great concept album. Shangri-La expands on the science-fiction theme of the duo’s See Mystery Lights, creating a more cohesive set of songs — on what might be called a rock opera — full of post-apocalyptic characters and stories within the album.
The album kicks off with three blazing disco tracks, all of them single-worthy. Album opener “Utopia” is a tropical ditty that sounds like walking into a luau on Mars, with its synthesized electric groove and strong, layered harmonies. Next up is the previously released single “Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire),” which features singer Claire Evans doing her best to cement her place as the new Annie Lennox. The song, a pounding fire-and-brimstone dance-floor track, the song is arguably...

4 avr. 2011, 9h05m par SoylenceIn reverse chronological order! These first seven albums are exclusively things from the past decade. All the albums I'd like to recommend from before I was born are going to be in a later posting because I think I've written enough for one night.
First, though, a note on my tastes: they're really not great by any critical standard. This is because most of the artists I really like are artists that blend pop music as an art (intelligent!) and pop music as entertainment (lots of hooks). Also, wit and camp are always appreciated. Oh, and a lot of the music I think is worth listening to (particularly on the modern side) is material a lot of people will dismiss with the label "hipster garbage." I honestly don't care because all of these are very accessible and not at all pretentious. On with the show.

2 avr. 2010, 22h52m par kahhtDid Pink Flloyd start this triangular trend? I can't say for sure but in the past few years there has been a proliferation of albums with triangular album artwork. Surpisingly, no albums that I saw contained a golden triangle (not even Golden Triangle). A golden triangle is the triangle created by the point of a five sided star. In other words, the height is exactly 1.618, or the golden ratio phi, times the width of the base.
Equilateral triangles are three sided shapes where all sides are of equal length and therefore all angles measure sixty degrees.

22 fév. 2010, 17h07m par risK49Indie, like Hip-Hop (alternative & underground) seems a bit on the slide -here's hopin' i'm proven wrong!! Geting really hard to distinguish between the qualities of Indie & Electronica, well and truly meshed after the mid-late 00's burst of DFA, LCD, Knife, Hot Chip, Gang Gang Dance, An.Col, Black Dice, Rapture, MGMT etc. Most of these boundaries have eroded beyond recognition. I like the way music does that to us!!!
Some great releases here, but very few of these are Indie, in the sense of what would have been defined as Indie only a couple of years ago. It's Indie-ish!!

27 jan. 2010, 16h09m par spinfluxI put them in the order I liked (the code allows for this and then you generate). I suppose since I only started using last.fm in July, it didn't give me a full 20 albums. HMM.
And yo, my first last.fm post. Hai last.fm bloggy thing! Sorry for just now getting around to you after installing your software three years ago. I was busy with Pandora. No competition, I heart you both in different ways.
2009 ushered in a lot of music that was old to everyone else but new to me. I get around to hearing things on my own time. I'm either way ahead or way behind when it comes to whatever I'm playing in heavy rotation. I had a big anti-indie rock chip on my shoulder that I finally got rid of. I realized music isn't automatically crap if it's popular. Well, not always. That's just my formative years of post-MTV betrayal talking. While I still can't get into stuff like Hot Chip or The Knife, I am finally becoming less wary of indie rock blended with electronic music. …
