Why? fut d’abord le surnom de l’artiste Jonathan « Yoni » Wolf. Avant la sortie en 2005 de l’album Elephant Eyelash, Why? devint un groupe composé de Doug McDiarmid, Matt Meldon, et de Josiah Wolf le frère aîné de Yoni.
Why? est un des groupes fondateurs du label anticon. d’Oakland (Californie). Plus récemment Matt Meldon quitta le groupe, Yoni restant le song writer et se mettant au clavier pour les concerts. Contrairement au style produit par leur label, Why? se rapproche plus du folk et du rock indé. Leurs paroles tendent vers l’abstract hip hop, elles se concentrent plus sur la création d’images poétiques abstraites que sur de vraies histoires.
Yoni Wolf est né à Cincinnati, Ohio. Avant sa première année de lycée, Yoni découvre dans la synagogue de son père un enregistreur 4 pistes et commence alors ses expérimentations musicales. Par la suite il s’essaye au rap, aux percussions et à la poésie.
En 1997, alors qu’il participait à un cours sur l’« Art du Sexe » à l’université de Cincinnati, Yoni rencontra Adam Drucker – plus connu sous le nom de Doseone. À la demi-finale de la en 1997, Doseone et Yoni forma Apogee, un groupe live improvisé avec Josiah le frère de Yoni et DJ Mr. Dibbs. Le partenariat entre Yoni et Doseone continua pendant plusieurs années, sous des noms divers comme cLOUDDEAD et Greenthink.

I think 41% was a bit of an exaggeration. I haven't seen them live, but Yoni seems pretty good on the Youtube videos I've watched.

He messed up on a huge part of "21st Pop Song" at the SF show I went to in October. He said in an interview that he does it quite often, and I don't know if they were serious, but he said he had a linguist at one of his concerts and said he messed up like 41% of his verses. But yeah, no big deal.

no it's not. the show was great. it's just frustrating that he slipped up on the one (sort of) old song. they're usually flawless. didn't mean to down the set at all. had a blast.
