Virgin Steele est un groupe de Heavy metal de New York, fondé en 1981. Plus récemment ils utilisent des éléments de Metal symphonique et progressif, leur style est quelquefois appelé epic metal.

Ils jouent ce qu’ils appellent du « barbare-romantique » métal, très symphonique avec de nombreuses caractéristiques de la musique classique. David DeFeis, le leader du groupe, donne cette description de leur musique : D’un murmure à un hurlement, barbare, romantique, emphatique, mais subtil, grandiose, mais terre-a-terre. Un appel, un cri une invocation de la Liberté et le réveil continuel jusqu’à la prise de conscience que tout moment de la vie doit être vécu jusqu’à son plein potentiel. C’est une force, une quête sacrée qui dirige Virgin Steele.


Biographie[1]

Le groupe a été fondé au début des années quatre-vingts par Jack Starr, un guitariste d’origine française, qui voulait trouver la recette pour former le groupe de heavy metal ultime. Le premier à répondre à l’appel fût le batteur Joey Ayvazian, et ensemble ils ont commencé à auditionner des chanteurs. Après une quarantaine de candidats, un ami de Joey présente David DeFeis à Jack. No Quarter de Led Zeppelin, Child In Time de Deep Purple et Catch The Rainbow de Rainbow lui permettent de se voir octroyé le rôle de chanteur, rôle qu’il a gardé depuis. Pour compléter la formation, David amène avec lui le bassiste Joe O’Reilly pour remplacer Kelly Nichols qu’il trouve mauvais.

    Black Light Bacchanalia is pretty damn good, the disappointment just comes from the fact that Virgin Steele created an album that would receive around a 8/10 rating after 5 albums with 10/10 ratings...

    Finally some Black Light Bacchanalia worshippers. It is a joy to find listeners whose scorn evolves into delight concerning the progressing musical research DeFeis has been into these late years. A Vision of Eden sequel cannot be unworthy, as the Lion's tragic enlightenment never fades.

    I fucking love love LOVE the fake ending of the song Dominion Day somewhere around the five minute mark! :D Well, actually I love many things in their music, but this time I needed to get that particular thing out of my chest. :) Could very well be the best power metal band ever, yes. At least one of the most unique. I agree with Mr. DeFeis that they are the classical music of today. A fusion. Also really sounds both barbaric and romantic. :P

    I have to say The Black Light Bacchanalia is a grower if any album ever was. I have listened to it in the car recently, and I've only gotten into some of its music, like, yesterday. At first the album seems too long and boring harp, but especially the majestic Nepenthe (I Live Tomorrow) and the overall calm atmosphere in the album like on "In a Dream of Fire" and "To Crown Them With Halos" has manifested itself to me. What first was boring and sleepy is now soothing and beautiful. Virgin Steele never seems to disappoint! Think Necropolis (He Answers Them with Death) might be my favorite song overall, although I wouldn't listen to the album any other way but straight through. Oh and the title song gets so fucking awesome towards the end I'd need to namedrop it if I talked about best parts in Virgin Steele's music (of those I know of, so far). :) Btw, I have 666 VS scrobbles at the moment. D:

    ...Black Light is just an "alright" album for me - which, while acceptable, is still bad considering I'm used to describing VS and their music with the utmost superlatives. Maybe it'll click later on. Dunno why I rambled like this, but I guess I just wanted to post something after a while. VS - still my favourite band.

    Been listening to the Atreus albums all over again lately.. It's hard to say whether I prefer the Marriage albums (that is, parts I and II - not Invictus although technically it's part of the "trilogy") or the Atreus albums.. At the moment I feel like the Atreus albums are their best, because they're so profound and versatile.. They are sort of "mood albums", though, in that they're very heavy to listen to due to the amount of different content, and thus I turn into the more "linear" Marriage albums... Invictus is definitely their most aggressive, though, kind of inbetween with the styles - lots of more doublebass and falsettos, some interludes and added epicness, while still retaining that heavy metal feel of the two previous dics. What's certain is that all the five (!) VS albums 1994-2000 are in the 93%+ or so range, and that's a streak no other band have pulled off in my opinion... Not one, five albums is just...too good. Well, VoE is still great, though.
