Kaada: He did a collaboration with Mike Patton titled Romances, so when his name showed up as one of the musicians performing in Wrocław, during Era New Horizons festival, I checked out his solo works and liked them. The gig was surprising, but very good. Chatted with him a little after the show, very modest guy. He was very nervous about the sound. But he sounded great.

2. What's the first song you ever heard by no.22?
M83: Probably something from Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts album, Unrecorded or Run Into Flowers. It was during listening to Irrumare's library. But it wasn't until I've heard America that made me listen to the whole album. Heavy stuff, but very ethereal at the same time.

Hanne Hukkelberg: It will be either the sung from the perspective of a bomb, You guessed it - Ticking Bomb or the suicidal story of The Pirate. Can't decide… :-/

The Young Gods: I've read an article in a polish music mag Tylko Rock (Only Rock). It was about industrial. Something like, 20 industrial albums every metalhead should know, and there was T.V. Sky. The fact that they used synths to sound as guitars made me give them a try.

Sat 21 Mar – Amanda Palmer

This past weekend I drove up to Houston, Texas to go see an Amanda Palmer concert with my girlfriend. She loves Amanda Palmer so she was extremely excited. She even cried when I told her about the show.

Well after an excruciating drive of about 5 or 6 hours, we got to her Aunt's house where we would be staying the night. We left for the House of Blues around 6:00 and got in line at 7:30 after eating. Luckily the doors opened at 8 so we got great spots. We we were pretty much dead center about with only two people in front of us.

The opening act was a group called Vermillion Lies. I didn't expect much because I've never been impressed by an opening act, but these two girls were great. They were funny, plus they kept talking about their love for New Orleans and, being from Louisiana, I thought it was cool to hear their perspective of the city.

When Amanda Palmer finally came out on stage I thought that my girlfriend was going to have a heart attack. I had to hold her up to keep her from fainting. She was completely awestruck for the first couple of songs, but eventually she got into it and started singing along. It was cool because the show was more interactive than any I'd been to before. She sort of talked to the audience for a bit, let people ask questions. Some of the fans were annoying, but Amanda was kind enough to tell them to shut up. She also stood up on her bench and modeled some 'What's in the Box?' underwear for Vermillion Lies.

Afterwards, we stuck around and bought some merchandise. My girlfriend got a poster and a pair of the underwear (ha), and I picked up an awesome 7" pressed on red vinyl by Vermillion Lies. I got it autographed by the two sisters for added awesomeness. My girlfriend also got her poster signed by Amanda Palmer. It was funny because she walked up to her and handed her the poster, but just kind of stared not saying anything. Amanda laughed and gave her a hug; it was cute. Overall, a great night and lots of fun. I suggest anyone nearby one of the remaining shows in the tour go see it.

I finally went to my first gig in San Francisco. On a recommendation from a friend I went to see the Vermillion Lies and Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band Double-header at the Great American Music Hall.

The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band were on first and they came storming in from the back with guitar, washboard and big damn drum in hand, playing their way onto the stage. These guys really got everyone jumping around and tapping their feet. Great fun.

Vermillion Lies, which was the band we went to see, were also fun in a completely different way. Their music is quirky but great. I loved the unconventional "instruments" that were pulled out of the box, and there was lots of audience participation... particularly by those who had obviously been to a Vermillion Lies gig before!

The venue itself is really nice. There were plenty of people there but it wasn't so busy that you couldn't move.

I ended up buying two albums by each band: The Whole Fan Damnily and Big Damn Nation by the Big Damn Band and What's in the Box? and Separated By Birth by Vermillion Lies. Listened to all four of them today and was not disappointed by any of them.
