Majestic final track. Quirky acoustic guitar, crescendo and just the right mixture of madness and songwriting. The instrumental section in the middle screams. Brilliant.

Did I hear a little 20th Century Schizoid Man reference?

Sounds better without the studio wizardry (as heard on the "Box" version).

Yes, one of their best. One thing about this album that makes it such a joy to listen to (for me, at least) is the presence of Nic Potter. They have a very "heavy" sound and a groove that is lost later, because there's a real rhythm section here with Potter and Evans (who played together in The Misunderstood--great band). Also, Potter overdubs savvy electric guitar (some mistake for Fripp) on a few cuts. Hammill's vox are top rate (even if his lyrics are not yet ). Anyway, I rarely see praise for Potter's role, and this album demonstrates his value to the band. Those organ peddles just don't provide that genuine bottom that a good bassist can. (Btw, I still think some of their best work came later, but this is underrated VdGG, and I wonder how the later stuff might have sounded with Potter ).

Well, this appears to be either kind of a little continuation of the plot of his story "Adam's Conviction", or just based on it.

Every step appears to be the unavoidable consequence of the preceding one, and in the end there beckons more and more clearly total annihilation.
