Formé à Bristol (GB) en 1993, l’expérimental Up, Bustle and Out se compose des producteurs Rupert Mould et D. « Ein » Fell. Tous les 2 réussirent à combiner avec brio des influences étendues allant du funk et de la soul à des sons traditionnels d’Istanbul, de Bolivie, d’Andalousie et d’Afrique du nord, en passant par le jazz, la house, l’ambient et le trip-hop. En sortant le single « Une amitié africaine », le duo attira l’attention du label Ninja Tune de Coldcut, qui sortit leur 1er LP, « The Breeze Was Mellow » en 1994. Le suivant, « One Colour Just Reflects Another » sortit en 1996.
