Le groupe originaire de Kristiansand en Norvège, commence en 1994 avec le nom de Natt. Ce n’est qu’en 1997 qu’il devient ce qu’il est aujourd’hui en se renomant Trail of Tears, avec l’arrivée de Helena Michaelsen (chant) et Jonathan Perez (batterie), ajoutés aux autres membres Ronny Thorsen (chant), Frank Roald Hagen (claviers), Runar Hansen (guitare), Terje Heiseldal (guitare), Kjell Rune Hagen (basse). Ils enregistrent une démo, vite suivi par deux albums (Disclosure in Red et Profundemonium) dans le style gothique metal mélangeant les voix soprano et death. En 2000 la chanteuse quitte la groupe et est remplacée par Cathrine Paulsen à laquelle un chanteur tenor vient s’ajouté. Le son du groupe commence alors a evolué vers un son puissant et mélodique au rythme très rapide avec l’album A New Dimension of Might. Mais Cathrine Paulsen quitte le groupe et ne sera pas remplacée. Le quatrième album Free Fall Into Fear se fait sans chant féminin toujours dans une veine black symphonique gothique. Pour le cinquième album Existentia la voix féminine refait son aparition, mais en décembre 2006, peu avant sa sortie prévue, après une tournée désastreuse au Mexique, la majorité des membres du groupe décident de mettre fin à Trail of Tears. Mais Ronny Thorsen refuse de laisser le groupe se terminer ainsi et décide de sortir l’album avec de nouveaux membres pour le groupe. Il est très vite rejoint par Cathrine Paulsen qui retourne dans le groupe, avec un nouveau line-up avec qui Ronny Thorsen part en tournée.
