Nah, everything else they've done pales in comparison to the 1985 Demo Tape.

I think I prefer Apollo 18 and the debut to Lincoln actually.

Everything else they've done pales in comparison to Lincoln [2] Apollo 18 and their debut come ever so close though.

They may just be the nerdiest band in the world. And this makes them infinately awesome.

The kind of music your 10 year old son would want for christmas because his perception of rock music stems solely from the Malcolm in the Middle theme. Novelty rock for tweens.

They Might Be Giants is one of the most creative and original bands I've ever had the pleasure to listen to, but it is a sad truth that they are dismissed as a novelty act by stupid people.

Really surprised to find people here like Nanobots better than Join Us. Join Us was great, Nanobots was just meh.

It took me a surprisingly high number of listens to hear Nanobots as one cohesive thing. The singular tracks were amazing, but the songs, particularly the miniature tracks, were so out-of-left-field from each other when compared to the seamlessness of something like Fingertips. I felt like I was listening to a higher quality version of They Might Be Giants vs. McSweeney's. Now I don't know why I ever thought that. It's a thing now! Hooray!

btw, i've just found out, that Tesla is one of the best track of the album. It so cute and tragic at the same time. yeah it sounds quite boring, but after couple listenings you'll feel how it emotional

They Might Be Giants is even better live! If you want to listen to some live sessions of theirs, they recently stopped by KDHX studios and recorded a couple of songs. Check it out here at http://go.kdhx.org/theymightbegiants31513

Join Us had more filler I think. Only weak track on Nanobots is Tesla, which is just offensively boring.

After some contemplation, I think I like Join Us more. Still not really sure how I feel about Nanobots on its own.

  • k_naruchiha94

Nanobots is a great album, much better than Join Us imo. Also love the Fingertips-like songs in the middle.

Gee, I used to think The Else was their only good album...

Then again though, maybe it'll just take some time to dissect properly.

  • kleptocephalus

Don't know how I feel about Nanobots. It's very much the same kind of album as Join Us was, but I'm hard-pressed to say whether it's better or worse. If anything I'm a little disappointed by how similar-sounding it is.

  • NiaChaaaaan

TMBG never ceases to amaze me when I see them live. Seeing them in Columbus this past weekend marked my 3rd time going to one of their shows and they were absolutely fantastic, as usual. Nanobots is a wonderful album... definitely one of my faves. :)

    mars 2013
  • Cox_of_Seagulls

I like them both a lot, but I'm not so sure that they're all that similar. Other than both being dismissed as novelty acts by stupid people.

    mars 2013
  • JAMOOL

the Ween comparison is really spot on though. Ween get too much flack for being a joke band and TMBG for being "geek rock" or whatever when in reality they're both great bands with some odd/cool tendencies, all you TMBG dudes who never got into Ween should do so

    mars 2013
  • SuckyMcCrapband

The new album is classic TMBG and easily the best since The Spine. Maybe even the best since Mink Car. Maybe even the best since the 90s. I don't know, I need more time with the album before I make any big proclamations like that, but if nothing else, "You're On Fire" joins "Ana Ng" and "Experimental Film" atop the "best first song on a TMBG album" list.

    février 2013
  • CoolJets

The new album is pretty great. Pretty sure it tops Join Us and The Else for me. Not touching The Spine but not much would. Keep up the good work boys!

    février 2013
  • Cox_of_Seagulls

I like the short little Fingertips esque tracks dotted around the second half of the album.

@akauser that's actually really interesting, i googled it for more information and had a fun 20 minutes, thanks!

    février 2013
  • akauser

@viledoom I think I read somewhere that Ween hated They Might Be Giants because they were always compared to each other by the press.

    février 2013
  • Kohdi

Does anyone know if they got there name from the 1971 movie by the same name?

    février 2013
  • viledoom

anyone else equate their more obscure stuff to "ween with an accordion"? or maybe even vice versa since they might be giants came first.

    février 2013
  • WasNotWhyNot

geek rock and quirky, well, people are always going to want to be different things. I think the whole world would be better off without the word quirky at this point.

    février 2013
  • WasNotWhyNot

lemon demon, neil cicierega, fits entirely too. he's said tmbg is a major influence and often covers tmbg songs. related artists almost never make sense on this site. I'd say these are pretty good for last.fm.

    février 2013
  • zvirblis

At least the first half of the Related Artists makes sense. Their two solo projects (no surprise there), and JoCo, who definitely fits. He's even done his own Flood show, which is just awesome.

  • unitedstatesof

and the only reason mc frontalot is there is some album bundle thing that happened in november or something where a bunch of albums were pay-what-you-want (i.e. 1 cent)

    janvier 2013
  • unitedstatesof

the problem with the similar artists is that the people who listen to tmbg generally all have different kinds of tastes so it just shows what the majority of people /also/ listen to - it should really be stuff like devo etc though
