Actually, the reason this album sounds so much like The Beatles is because all of the British Invasion bands came from the same mold as they tried to produce "Maximum R&B" records as it were. Since this was The Who's first record, that's the sound they were aiming for. However, several songs do sound very much like The Beatles, especially "The Kids Are Alright", which I've heard is "the best Beatles song The Beatles never wrote". While they weren't trying to achieve a Beatles sound per say, they made something very similar, but in the musical climate of that time it was very hard NOT to sound like The Beatles, since they were literally Here, There and Everywhere.

Am I the only one who thinks this sounds incredibly similar to The Beatles work? Daltrey actually sounds like McCartney on many of the songs, some of the songs use similar or even identical lyrics and ideas, and I believe some of the melodies are even the same. It's just interesting, especially considering the major leap to Tommy a mere two years after Sgt. Pepper's, and the fact that I've seen them acknowledge many bands, but not The Beatles.

I love this album. I also love the rest of their discography (excluding any post-Moon releases), but nothing hits the spot for me like their early stuff.

these songs are good but they emphasize the harmony more than the instrumental talents. if think i hear petes guitar begging to let loose. good bass solos at least.
