Fondé en 1993 The Sea and Cake est un groupe pop/rock à dimension jazzy, originaire de Chicago dans l’Illinois. Le groupe est composé de 4 personnes : Sam Prekop (ex Shrimp Boat chanteur et guitariste), Archer Prewitt (ex Coctails, guitariste), John McEntire (batteur et plein d’autres trucs, également membre de Tortoise et Gastr Del Sol) et Eric Claridge (ex Shrimp Boat bassiste). C’est l’un des plus anciens groupes du label Thrill Jockey. Le nom « The sea and cake » vient d’une chanson de Gastr Del Sol qui s’intitule « The C in Cake ».
À partir de 1997, le groupe s’est appuyé sur les sources sonores électroniques, tels que les percussions et de synthétiseurs, de la couleur de sa musique, mais a conservé son caractère distinctif après-combo jazz style.
Les membres Sam Prekop et Archer Prewitt ont chacun publié des albums solo.
Les couvertures de The Sea and Cake sont en grande partie réalisées par Eric Claridge pour les peintures et par Prekop pour les photographies (extrait : http://www.clementine-gallery.com/prekop2003.html). Prewitt a lui aussi des talents d’artiste puisqu’il a publié sa propre bande dessinée (extrait : http://www.mica.edu/comics/images/prewitt.jpg) et fait de la conception graphique.
Le groupe était en pause de 2004 à 2007, mais un nouvel album intitulé Everybody a été publié en mai 2007 et le groupe a repris les tournées.
