Formés à New-York à la fin des années 90, The National est fondé par les frères Devendorf et Dessner rejoint par leur ami Matt Berninger, trentenaires bien accomplis qui décident de quitter leurs jobs respectifs pour se lancer dans le projet. Avec un premier album encore brouillon, le groupe parvient tout de même à infiltrer le milieu rock new-yorkais, côtoyant les Tindersticks ou Interpol. Leur second album Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers se fait remarquer par la critique et énonce l’univers sombre et dépréciatif de The National qu’ils allaient découler tout au long de leur discographie. Alligator sorti en 2005 leur assurera un succès plus populaire cette fois-ci avec toujours cette formule rock à la fois enlevée et posée. Leur dernier album Boxer sort en 2007, et se place dans la lignée du précédent même si cette fois la voix de Berninger se voit plus dépouillée et habitée.Ils sortent, en 2008,un EP composé de démos et de versions live, sous le nom de The Virginia EP, on y retrouve des morceaux comme Today, Lucky You ou encore Fake Empire.

Got to see them live at Cornell, till rain and lightning ruined everything. The low tone of the singing is not common, and I love the harmony of the varied instruments.
