Biographie

New York, États-Unis (1999 – aujourd'hui)

Originaires de Cincinnati dans l’état d’Ohio (Etats-Unis), les membres de The National mettent leur groupe sur pied à New York (Brooklyn) en 1999. Le groupe se forme autour du chanteur et songwriter Matt Berninger, des frères Scott Devendorf (guitare) et Bryan Devendorf (batterie), des deux autres frères Aaron Dessner (basse, piano) et Bryce Dessner (guitare).

The National, très influencé par le alternatif américain, la anglaise et même la -rock, sort son premier album sur, Brassland Records, le label des frères Dessner. Sans titre, ce premier disque reçoit des critiques élogieuses de la part de la presse rock, qui voit dans le travail du groupe un compromis intelligent entre rock indépendant et country-pop. La voix, grave, sombre de Matt Berninger, les compositions léchées, cérébrales du groupe séduisent d’emblée la critique et le public, qui voient en The National des alter ego de Wilco, Leonard Cohen ou même Joy Division.

Après la sortie de ce disque, The National écume les salles de concerts durant sa tournée, acquérant sa notoriété durant des prestations scéniques très remarquées grâce à l’atmosphère baroque qu’elles dégagent… Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, le deuxième album de The National, sort en 2003. Produit par Peter Katis, qui a notamment travaillé avec les new-yorkais de Interpol, ce disque est salué par la critique, mais le succès public acquis depuis 2001 demeure relativement confidentiel.

    New album is obvious, lazy, pretentious, has lyrics so angtsy and relatable to the point of insincerity, soaring vox (hurr >tfw bro omg ;~;), obligatory string arrangements to manipulate you into thinking they're witty "avant-garde" composers, etc. etc. etc. No surprise Pitchfork dickrides it, and it's the 5th greatest possible human effort of 2013, according to Rate Your Music. Radiohead, Arcade Fire, The National, the list could go on...
