The Manhatan Transfer est un quatuor vocal trés influencé par le doo-wop des années 50, mais qui se consacre principalement à la vocalise, cette interprétation vocale et verbale du jazz instrumental.
» Vocalese » est d’ailleurs le titre d’un de leurs albums le mieux réussi, avec Count Basie et Jon Hendricks. Formé en 1972 par un chauffeur de taxi new-yorkais, Tim Hauser, le groupe a depuis émigré en Californie et son succès est mondial depuis la reprise du » Birdland » de Weater Reaport (1980).

Alongside "The Singers Unlimited" and "Take 6" they are the best a capella/ vocal prowess group by far. "Smile again", " A Nightinghale Sang in Barkley Square" and "Clouds" are standards.
