TOP 52 ALBUMS OF 2011
8 jan. 2012, 23h01m par Confessions87
1YRON was born out of the notion of reviewing records exactly one year after their initial release date. This alternative to reviewing a record as and when it is released is an attempt to understand a record better within the context of its fairly recent absorption into mainstream or underground consciousness. For the past seven months 1YRON has focused on reviewing some of 2010's best records. With 2011 drawing to a close and with 2012 just around the corner, it's almost time to focus again on 2011's releases. Over the next year 1YRON will continue to review records on their first birthdays, the majority of which will feature in this list.

Most Played Albums of 2011

Hello everyone! Welcome to this wonderful tradition of number crunching. A precious opportunity for yours truly to rant outside of my own head in a long form medium that's not limited to 140 characters.
2011 was definitely more varied than our last recap with a lot more diversity, thanks in big part to my new BFF Spotify. But there's always a downside: too much variety means not much repetition and this year we have the first ever recount without a song reaching 100 plays and don't even think about a single album passing 1000 scrobbles!
I noticed one particular phenomenon this past year: there were a lot of well-established and previous chart topping artists that were overlooked this past year, some of them, for no apparent reason! I even liked some of their preview singles. What a mystery! Albums like Okkervil River - I Am Very Far, TV on the Radio - Nine Types Of Lights, Dum Dum Girls - Only in Dreams, Beirut - The Rip Tide and Toro y Moi - Underneath the Pine, just to name a handful that never got the change to return. … -

July 2011, You Belong To The City

Got to say I really regret using a line from the Pet Shop Boys' Please as the title for last month's blog, as it would fit perfectly to this month's. First up is the mighty Midnight City by M83, one of those killer tracks that clicks right away and still sounds great after far too many listens in a row. Catchier than a rash in a brothel, it even reclaims the sax solo and makes it sound a-maz-ing. More 80s that 80 Jan Hammer soundtracks to 80 episodes of Miami Vice, and brilliant for it.
Lesser Known by Adventure might have been out for a while, but I only found it last month in my promo pile. If M83 is inspired by the cheesier side of mid 80s MOR pop, this is coming more from the Pet Shop Boys/early Depeche Mode camp.Open Door is a corker of an opener (ahem), and overall it sounds a bit like Les Rythmes Digitales but with more tunes. Alas Rio is not a cover of the Duran Duran hit, but you can't help thinking that with a name like that… -

The Horrors - Skying REVIEW
4 jui. 2011, 11h56m par eggy1609
The Horrors are a five-piece band from Southend-on-Sea who formed in 2005 and “Skying” is their third album following their 2007 debut “Strange House” and critically acclaimed follow up “Primary Colours” in 2009. I wasn’t a fan of their garage punk debut, but with “Primary Colours” the band took a massive step forward and on “Skying” they have continued that progression even further forward and are now a completely different band than when they first emerged.
Following the release of first single “Still Life” I was expecting something special from this album but on first listen every expectation was easily surpassed, and with every listen it gets better. “Skying”, although a very different album has a lot of similarities with “Primary Colours”, obviously Faris’ trademark vocals are same for the most part, although he doesn’t seem to be biting at his words as in the past, and the use of synthesisers is still prevalent. Differences are noticeable thoughout; there are no spoken word parts… -
