Groupe précurseur du gothic metal, il est composé principalement des deux frères Rutten, Hans à la batterie et René à la guitare, du claviériste Frank Boeijen, du bassiste Hugo Prinsen Geerlings, qui quittera le groupe en 2004, remplacé par Marjolein Kooijman. Mais le groupe est surtout connu pour sa chanteuse Anneke van Giersbergen, qui depuis l’album Mandylion, en 1995, occupe la place centrale du groupe. Cet album est considéré encore aujourd’hui comme un chef d’œuvre du Metal Atmosphérique.
Ils sortent alors l’album Nighttime Birds, qui, malgré quelques bons morceaux, ne conviendra pas vraiment au style du groupe, la direction artistique étant en partie sous contrôle de la maison de disque Century Media qui rêve de reproduire l’effet que Mandylion avait produit… Ils s’attellent alors à l’album How To Measure a Planet?, changent de style et optent pour un ambiant atmosphérique, proche du trip rock (le terme est utilisé par le groupe lui-même). L’album est alors très apprécié, tant pour son style novateur que pour son ambiance planante. Il marque également le départ de Jelmar Wiersma.
Ils sortent ensuite l’album If_Then_Else, album qui change à nouveau et tourne vers le rock électronique, l’album déroute un peu par son manque de cohésion entre les titres mais contient certains classique comme Amity ou Saturnine. Puis vient l’album Souvenirs qui va connaître le succès pour sa sonorité travaillée, son ambiance très atmosphérique, et des morceaux de chant sublimes. Et pour la première fois sur l’un de leurs albums, ils collaborent avec un chanteur extérieur au groupe, Trickster G.

DreamingAlaska, я тоже не воспринимаю так Гэзерингов, я воспринимаю их как Руттены + все остальные. Ну а новая вокалистка мало того, что сильно уступает Анюте по всем параметрам, так еще пытается петь в манере госпожи ван Гирсберген, и это особенно раздражает.
