Devin Townsend est un musicien multi-instrumentiste (entre autres chanteur/guitariste/claviériste) Canadien né le 5 mai 1972 à Vancouver. Il est découvert par Steve Vai à l’âge de 19 ans et enregistre l’album Sex & Religion avec ce dernier. Dégoûté par l’industrie de la musique, il fonde l’ultra brutal Strapping Young Lad avec lequel il crée un nouveau genre de Metal extrême et sort le chef d’œuvre de violence contrôlée City. Le célèbre groupe de Heavy Metal anglais Judas Priest lui propose d’occuper la place vacante de chanteur en son sein après le départ de Rob Halford (une des idoles de Devin), mais celui-ci décline l’offre, préférant une indépendance artistique totale plutôt qu’une reconnaissance de masse.
Ce personnage à la créativité débordante mène également une carrière en solo sous son propre nom d’abord, puis sous le nom de The Devin Townsend Band. La parodie de musique « branchée » nord américaine Punky Brüster ou des chefs d’œuvre comme Ocean Machine, Infinity, Terria ou plus récemment Synchestra montrent un artiste ambivalent, plein d’humour et très soucieux de la qualité de sa musique.
Après avoir sorti en 2007 l’album Ziltoid The Omniscient, Devin Townsend arrête la composition et se tourne vers la production.

Addicted isn't really like either. It's got flavors of both, yes (a lot of Vampira/Gaia/Sunshine and Happiness/Deadhead/Slow Me Down sort of bits), but it definitely is its own animal. If anything, it's like a Physicist that doesn't suck.
