The Congos est le nom d’un groupe de reggae jamaïcain formé en 1977 par Cedric Myton et Roydel Johnson. Ce nom a été choisi car c’est le Congo qui a fourni le plus fort contingent d’esclaves à la Jamaïque. Ce duo est repéré par Lee Perry. Accompagné du baryton Watty Burnett il enregistre la même année Heart of the Congos dans les studios Black Ark à Kingston. Le groupe se sépare ensuite rapidement.
Ce groupe est considéré comme l’une des plus belle harmonies jamaïquaines, en particulier avec l’album Heart of the Congos.
En 1980, Roydel Johnson quitte le groupe pour une carrière solo en Angleterre.

Back in the late seventies I would play Heart of the Congos album constantly and even now played often. It is a testimony to Scratches sound sculptures that they still sound fresh today and that so many artists were cueing up to voice on the fisherman riddim- that was a double helping of versions and not one bad apple in that barell either !!
