The Boomtown Rats est un groupe de rock irlandais qui exista de 1975 à 1985. Ses membres étaient Bob Geldof (chanteur), Johnnie Fingers (clavier), Garry Roberts (guitare), Gerry Cott (guitare), Pete Briquette (basses) et Simon Crowe (batterie).
Bob Geldof était actif dans les concerts de charité comme le Live Aid ou le Live 8.
Le plus grand succès du groupe est le single I Don’t Like Mondays (1979) qui reste numéro 1 en Grande Bretagne pendant quatre semaines. En revanche, la chanson fut boycottée par les médias américains… I Don’t Like Mondays fait en effet référence à Brenda Ann Spencer, qui, le 29 janvier 1979 dans une école primaire à San Diego en Californie, armée d’un fusil, blessa huit enfants, un officier de police et tua deux adultes, et qui n’éprouva aucun regret et n’avoua aucun mobile particulier, expliquant, entre autres, « je n’aime pas le lundi ». Ce fait divers et surtout l’absence de motivations poussant la femme à tuer ont inspiré les paroles de la chanson devenue n°1 des charts britanniques, dont le refrain était:
Tell me why? (dis moi pourquoi?)
I don’t like Mondays. (je n’aime pas les lundis)
I want to shoot (je veux tirer)
The whole day down. (toute la journée)

One of the first bands I ever really got into and the first album was my very first album i bought.Remember seeing Rat Trap on TOTP with candlestick solo and Johnny fingers on piano in his pyjamas.Brilliant

'The fine art of surfacing' was like the first album I bought as a kid ..... listening to it now makes you appreciate just how ahead of its time it was in terms of production. Loads of killer tunes with 'Mondays' probably being one of the weaker ones (imho of course)
