  • The Delightful 65 of the 60's! (Best Albums 1960-1969)

1 The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
    (1967)
One would be hard pressed to name a rock album whose influence has been as broad and pervasive as The Velvet Underground and Nico. While it reportedly took over a decade for the album's sales to crack six figures, glam, punk, new wave, goth, noise, and nearly every other left-of-center rock movement owes an audible debt to this set. While The Velvet Underground had as distinctive a sound as any band, what's most surprising about this album is its diversity. Here, the Velvets dipped their toes into dreamy pop ("Sunday Morning"), tough garage rock ("Waiting For The Man"), stripped-down R&B ("There She Goes Again"), and understated love songs ("I'll Be Your Mirror") when they weren't busy creating sounds without pop precedent. …

The Beatles - She's Leaving Home

    Genre: Pop
Similar: Since like every band ever says they're influenced by the Beatles, this one is tough.

This is my least favorite track from Sgt. Pepper, and I still like it. Obviously, I like this band in general (it's obvious if you see my artist chart even though that's mostly from my listening habits three years ago), but I think it's great that they're still so huge because they really did produce some good music.

  • The Tyranny of Melody: Top Ten Songs at 3:35

    27 jan. 2009, 21h41m par rockrobster23

Usually as I'm listening to music I am making a playlist as I go, and since I'm an old DJ, segues and transitions are important to me. I know no one else is listening; it's the only thing that keeps me from apologizing when I make an unintentionally jarring segue. But I'm listening, and it's important to me.

In some ways it's a private game: I get extra satisfaction for what seem to be difficult jumps, such as moving from Hank Williams to Husker Du in just a few songs. It's practice for mix tapes I'll never make, and a self-directed independent study seminar on musical genres and how they complement and comment on one another.

Oh, yeah, I am a total geek. To the bone. I'm not as angry as this guy, and I find his concern for rigid classification bizarre, but he's kind of a spiritual uncle:

In playing this playlist game, one of the hardest subgenres to get out of is power pop, because it doesn't have many exit points, places where it suggests intersections with other kinds of music. …

  • [78] The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

We're Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
We hope you will enjoy the show!

Haha, what hasn't been said about this album? It's the best album of all time according to Rolling Stone Magazine. Such an album simply can't be nothing else than extraordinary. So it is.

The Beatles are heading a bit back to their poppy side, there is less experimenting going on than on Revolver (which makes Revolver slightly better in my opinion), but they're still The Beatles of course. This album doesn't sound dated at all, just because the Beatles their sound will never be dated.

Thanks to this list, I started listening to The Beatles albums (and there are still some to come) and now I hear The Beatles everywhere. In nowadays pop/rock music I mean. Even when the music is a complete other style or genre, there is a great chance you can hear something in it The Beatles have done too. Hissing sounds, or sound effects or the way they sing together. …

  • Just dug this one out #24 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles

    18 nov. 2008, 10h12m par grange85

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

I've always been most fond of the transitionary era of The Beatles and for many years have proclaimed Rubber Soul and Revolver as my two favourite albums, and that the band's pinnacle was the Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane single. The proclamation would normally have been followed by a dismissive sneer at Sgt. Pepper and pretty much all their subsequent albums. My thinking was that with Pepper they threw all their ideas and imaginings into a bloody great bucket which was then stirred and stirred into an over-rated mess that left them pretty much bereft of any pop sensibility for the rest of the band's existence. The rest of their career was spent churning out tiresome rock music (with a rare treat here and there) until they, thankfully for all of us, imploded.

Having Ian MacDonald's awesome Revolution in the Head in the toilet for a couple of months urged me to reassess that position. My opinion was so firmly entrenched that it turned out that Sgt. …

  • Songs about moving

    22 août 2008, 3h41m par safflowerseed

I've decided to take a break from ranting futilely about social injustices to look for songs that mention moving or leaving home. This is what I have so far.

John Denver - Leaving on a Jet Plane
The Beatles - She's Leaving Home
    Elton John - Rocket Man
Led Zeppelin - Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You
    Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes
    Mirah - Cold Cold Water
Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of This Country
    Goldfrapp - Caravan Girl
Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat
Patrick Wolf - The Railway House

I'm too tired to try to think of any more, and I would like to see what other people come up with. Please suggest some

  • Top 20!

    22 juin 2008, 0h49m par AmpersandCM

Hey, peeps. I haven't posted a journal in awhile, so I decided I should. So, here's one of those much-loved Top -- surveys:

    1. Keane (984)
    First: Everybody's Changing
Love: Probably Is It Any Wonder?, a song I actually have very little tolerance for these days.
Favorite: Oh god...I think at the moment I'd have to say Hamburg Song and On A Day Like Today. Oh, and Fly To Me.

    2. The Beatles (387)
First: I'm going to pass on this one. It's impossible to answer.
Love: She Loves You. That was my favorite song when I was about 6 years old.
    Favorite: She's Leaving Home.

    3. Weezer (386)
First: Beverly Hills, which made me despise Weezer. The first song I liked was Perfect Situation, which isn't much better, is it?
    Love: Buddy Holly.
Favorite: El Scorcho, Pink Triangle (acoustic), and I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams.

    4. Beulah (351)
First: Don't Forget To Breathe (thanks, Clark and Michael).
Love: If We can Land a Man on the Moon…
