I personally consider AFP as Koz' best album. He himself said that in an interview: Q: "Looking back over those 20 years, which records are you most proud of, and why?" MARK: "Admiral Fell Promises, hands down. Bury me with that one. That album is me at my best, my most focused. It's cohesive, beautiful and my playing was inspired by the legendary, Andres Segovia. " So I find it really hard to fathom why AFP is the least listened album here on Lastfm. In fact no song of the album makes it to the top 15 songs list. Adimral Fell Promises is w/o doubt the best album I've ever heard. I even rate it higher than Pink Moon, an album very very close to my heart. Here is the link to the entire interview I referred earlier: http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/wild-mercury-sound/mark-kozelek-a-new-qa

Anyone have any recommendations of music similar to Admiral Fell Promises? I've started to listen to certain artists who play classical guitar but I've no idea where to go next.

sun kil moon and the album leaf doing an album together! incredible.

So your argument is that Sun Kil Moon don't variate their style much between albums (which they do; compare the flamingo of Admiral and the alt-country stuff on Ghosts) and they sound like Iron & Wine, so therefore anyone listening to the music is tone deaf, or, it seems, incompetent? Including yourself? Perhaps you're the one who needs to provide further scrutiny to this band. Among The Leaves is quite different from his other work... the guitar playing and songwriting in general is more rustic, the lyricism almost completely without metaphor, and the arrangements decidedly dry and restrained.

And to whoever says he is the most "underrated and under appreciated" give all artist with less than 10k listeners in lastfm a break...

    novembre 2012
  • Mooncitygirl

Most songs sound the same and he sounds similar to iron and wine and the other bunch of folk artists, what is this crap about the records being different between each other? People should really get their shit together or perhaps get checked for hearing issues, I can't believe 307,857 listeners are deaf toned.

It took me a while, but I've really come around to Among the Leaves. It's quite different from his other work, but it's still powerful. I find the songs getting into my head at the oddest times, and when that happens, I know the album is really growing on me. Overall, Kozelek is still perhaps the most underrated and under appreciated musician of our time.

PrairieD0G: At the breakneck frequency he's been touring the past few years, that doesn't surprise me, and it's always puzzled me as to why he thinks he *has* to play Mistress every set. I don't think anyone would care otherwise. Admiral Fell Promises was one of the best records of 2010; Among the Leaves is one of the best of this year--they deserve to see their light of day, especially the way he is performing them live. My observations this tour http://www.panicmanual.com/2012/10/08/concert-review-mark-kozelek-october-3-the-great-hall-toronto/

Saw him last night in DC. He was great and sounded just like the live albums. Only thing, is I wish he played more Red House Painters stuff and didn't half-ass the endings on a lot of the older Sun Kil Moon songs that were requested. You could tell it pains him to have to play them again, which is a bummer. "Duk Koo Kim" was an awesome way to end it though, and "Mistress" with the piano accompaniment sounded amazing. "Half Moon Bay" was another one that sounded awesome live, blowing the album version away. I'm so happy I finally got to see him in person after years of waiting; front row seats too! Also, shoutout to Matt the lawyer who I met there and gave me the I'll Be There EP.

Definitely the worst album of original material by Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon. But it's still pretty good most of the time. Though I sort of think this is like Kozelek's first non-masterpiece :/

Agree with the two below. It seems like he had some songs that he just needed to write and get out, even if they didn't have his typical polish.

The new album makes for a good memoir of sorts. Seems like a keeper for fans, but not the kind you'd foist on a new listener to either RHP or SKM.

    juin 2012
  • helloimjoshua

As nice as the new album may be, I don't think it'll have much lasting power in comparison to the majority of Kozelek's other releases.

New album is a welcome change in approach; I'm loving the lighthearted humor, especially. Really shaking off those gloomy RHP days (which I still love too). And complete lyrics included in the booklet? That's a first.
