Sufjan Stevens (né le 1er juillet 1975 à Detroit dans le Michigan) est un auteur-compositeur-interprète américain. Il est connu pour ses chansons qui portent autant attention aux textes qu’à l’instrumentation. Il joue de plusieurs instruments différents, avec une préférence pour le banjo. Il est aujourd’hui un des artistes américains les plus prolifiques et connait un grand succès critique aux États-Unis.

Carrière

Sa carrière musicale commença aux côtés du groupe folk-rock Marzuki. Il est également musicien dans le groupe Danielson Familly.

Etudiant au Hope College, Stevens écrit et enregistre son premier album solo, A Sun Came, qui sortit sur le label créé avec son beau-père : Asthmatic Kitty Records.

Après avoir déménagé à New York, où il s’inscrit à un cours d’écriture à la New School for Social Research, il enregistra son deuxième album, Enjoy Your Rabbit, un disque d’Electronica traitant des signes du zodiaque chinois. Il décida ensuite de dédier un disque à chacun des états des États-Unis d’Amérique, dont les deux premiers s’intitulent Michigan et Illinois. Ses textes, parfois empreints d’une influence chrétienne, évoquent généralement les villes des États-Unis, telles que Chicago, Detroit ou Jacksonville, des lieux comme les chutes de Tahquamenon, mais également des poètes (Carl Sandburg), voire des tueurs en série (John Wayne Gacy).
