Story of the Year prend forme à St. Louis, dans le Missouri sous le nom de Big Blue Monkey. À l’époque, soit à la fin des années 90, le groupe sonne un peu lourd, on peut penser aux Deftones. De plus, l’alignement du groupe tel qu’il se présente aujourd’hui est différent.
Big Blue Monkey se produit fréquemment dans les environs de St. Louis et propose des EP tout en voyant de nombreux musiciens se succéder. Une auto-promotion constante et créative permet au groupe de se faire remarquer par John Feldmann, leader de Goldfinger. Il parle du groupe à l’étiquette Maverick Records qui signifie son intérêt et offre un contrat à la jeune formation.
En 2002, Big Blue Monkey devient Story of the Year et s’installe dans le sud de la Californie et profite de son amitié avec Feldmann pour partir en tournée avec Goldfinger. Le groupe est désormais formé du chanteur Dan Marsala, des guitaristes Ryan Phillips et Phillip Sneed, du bassiste Adam Russell et du batteur Joshua Willis. Les cinq musiciens entrent en studio avec Feldmann qui a l’habitude, lui qui aussi réalisé l’album de The Used.
