With What's Going On, Gaye meditated on what had happened to the American dream of the past -- as it related to urban decay, environmental woes, military turbulence, police brutality, unemployment, and poverty. These feelings had been bubbling up between 1967 and 1970, during which he felt increasingly caged by Motown's behind-the-times hit machine and restrained from expressing himself seriously through his music. Finally, late in 1970, Gaye decided to record a song that the Four Tops' Obie Benson had brought him, "What's Going On". When Berry Gordy decided not to issue the single, deeming it uncommercial, Gaye refused to record any more material until he relented. Confirmed by its tremendous commercial success in January 1971, he recorded the rest of the album over ten days in March, and Motown released it in late May. Rush emerged at exactly the right time, becuase 1974 was otherwise not that strong of a year. It was a "gap" year for the might troika of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Pink Floyd. Deep Purple did their part (see below). Eagles gave us one, but they weren't the powerhouse they were yet to become and it wasn't that strong; they actually spent the year finding their way along new direction that would be revealed the following summer.

But in a golden era of prog rock, I think there was a growing demand for something that more flat-out rocked with less complexity. Or maybe just a complementary alternative with less keyboards. That gap was filled with a number of great debuts and new styles. Some drew on the prevailing influences such as guitar-driven hard rock, some drew on progressive elements, some on the dark themes, and some even on glam. …

I thought I'd try a new feature in my Journal. The idea is that I look at each of the last 40 years, 1969-2008, in terms of what music was released in that year. Best Album and best song, as well as how many songs from each year I have in my iTunes. At time of writing, I have a total of 7743 songs on my iTunes.

A friggin weird album, but also brilliant. This is not so much an album of songs, as an album of kickass moments. Listen to the moment when Amazing Journey switches to Sparks, or 4:35 into We're Not Gonna Take It.. Sublime.
Best Song
Gimme Shelter
One of the best intros in rock history. Nay, music history. The fact that Martin Scorsese has used it in about 5 of his movies and It still gives me chills every time, says it all.

381. Modern Lovers, Modern Lovers

I love love love Jonathon Richmond, and I love this album. Great Low-Fi rock songs, and not a bad track. There is such an honesty to Richmond that can and will completely charm you. Highly recommended, I would of put this in the top 50.

382. More Songs About Buildings and Food, Talking Heads

I really enjoyed this one. They still sound a little raw, but more competent and ambitious if that makes sense. I would of rated it higher then "Stop Making Sense". No bad songs, and a lot of creative energy.

383. A Quick One(Happy Jack), The Who

The Who's second album, and a charming one. Management wanted them all to contribute songs so as to get that Beatles publishing money, and as a result, you get a mixed bag of wonders. No bad tracks on it…
