Trapped in a Scene: UK Hardcore 1985-1989: Frontline Reports from the Hardcore Punk Underground by Ian Glasper 2010
Finally someone put out a music book based on a scene I was actually into at the time it was going on. I got my copy and just finished the first part with Napalm Death, what a fantastic read... easily the most detailed and comprehensive early history of ND I've ever seen. I'm astonished how thick this thing is, bout 500 pages! that are not just taken up by photos either, but there is an absurd amount of text here and I like how each band gets a healthy amount of space too. For the record it doesn't feature every single UKHC band from the time, and unfortunately there isn't any Satanic Malfunctions or Legion of Parasites, but it wasn't due to a blatant omission but just unable to get a hold of certain bands over the 3 year period this book was written. I cant think of any others (aside from maybe a few minor bands) that were left out though. …

31 déc. 2009, 22h36m par garynotrashcougI always seem to take a morbid interest in my own stats and charts, so let's review my top 50 albums of 2009 by play count. I was much more active on Last.fm this year than last year, especially later in the year and I was exploring a lot of music, so there weren't too many albums that got played to death. Still others charted high, simply because of the vast number of tracks per album (hooray for hardcore!). Well, that's the year wrapped up in a neat little package. I'm eager to see how 2010 turns out.

Once in awhile, a collection of music will fall into my hands that completely alters my perception of the world of music and the sonic possibilities. One of the more important instances of this came courtesy of Earache and their Grindcrusher "sampler." This hour plus tape was a virtual epiphany of extreme music when I first purchased it back in the early '90s. As a young enthusiast of thrash metal, I was just becoming aware of death metal and grindcore. Little did I know how much variety and inventiveness there was available in the underground music scene. Not only did Grindcrusher introduce me to such luminaries as Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower, Carcass and Terrorizer, but I also discovered over the top noisecore like Sore Throat and off the wall stuff like Naked City, as well as Godflesh who became my gateway to all things industrial. After all of these years, it's still a good listen.

The Destruction of Small Ideas - Montreme (2007)
This is the latest full-length of one of my favorite instrumental-bands, they play thier very own blend of math rock, post-rock and some electronic. Thier music sounds fresh, clean and beautiful, the details fit together perfect. The thing about 65daysofstatic that sets them apart from other acts in the genre is the fact they have good compositions without ever overcomposing.
Although I absolutley love this band this album is aa bit of a dissapointment from me. The whole album feels more straight-forward and less epic then The Fall of Math or One Time for All Time. Not a bad thing for every band but the thing I loved about 65daysofstatic was that these guys could dabble around in soft notes and strange patterns for minutes, and it would feel absolutley natural. …

If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference.
