À l’origine dénommé « Polarbears », le groupe fut fondé en Écosse en 1994 par le guitariste et chanteur/compositeur Gary Lightbody et le bassiste Mark McClelland (tous deux Irlandais du nord) alors qu’ils étaient encore étudiants à l’université de Dundee. Du fait de considérations légales, le groupe dû changer de nom. En effet, un groupe américain, mené par l’ancien bassiste de Jane’s Addiction, portait déjà ce nom. C’est ainsi qu’ils adoptèrent le nom de « Snow Patrol ».
Leur premier enregistrement fut un EP de trois pistes, Starfighter Pilot, les percussions étant assurées par le batteur du groupe Belle & Sebastian, Richard Colburn. Peu après, Jonny Quinn, lui aussi originaire d’Irlande du Nord, se joint au groupe en tant que batteur permanent. Le groupe enregistra son premier album, Songs For Polarbears en 1997, suivi de When It’s All Over We Still Have To Clear Up en 2001. Ces deux albums sont passés assez inaperçus ailleurs que dans leur pays natal, mais ne furent pas des échecs pour autant.
Iain Archer, guitariste et compositeur, se joint au groupe entre 2001 et 2003 en tant que guitariste de scène et collaborateur pour la composition du troisième album. Peu après que le groupe soit jeté du label Jeepster, le guitariste Nathan Connolly se joint au trio et c’est ensemble qu’ils signent chez Fiction Records, une branche de Polydor Records.

They're indie, it's a music genre (it's officially a music genre) and it doesn't mean only releasing their music independently. It's their music style that is independent rock, it's independent from any other kind of rock music. In my opinion. Anyway. Up To Now rocks :D It made me recall my concert experiences from this summer....

Royal Albert hall was amazing, especially with james corden on Tues, Very well done Snow Patrol. Gary did well, cracking a few jokes here and there. Good to see them back having a good time. I also got Nathan's pick & the setlist off the stage... awesome stuff!
