when I was a little girl (4-12) I would listen to the same Simon and Garfunkel album literally every single night and that was the only way I could fall asleep. everything about their music melts my heart.

This song is beautiful. It's simplicity combined with the haunting tone of the melody (and lyrics) makes for such a lean, poised and introspective piece of music. However, the most popular version of this song is the re-recorded one featuring a backing band. Made to pander to the then-current folk rock movement, this recording succeeds only as an abomination. The original is simply two harmonized voices and an acoustic guitar. The simplicity in its arrangement complemented by the simplicity in its execution is what makes this song a success. The folk rock disaster is a disgrace, yet litters every greatest hits compilation. Why?
