It was actually written for Andrew Goodman, the 20 year old Freedom Summer volunteer that was killed alongside Shwerner and Chaney on June 21st, 1964. He was a classmate and friend of Paul Simon's. Beautiful song! (2) All they were doing is trying to get Africian Americans in Mississippi registered to vote. The local police and KKK worked together to kill the 3 heroes.

Also, the incident mentioned by Big_Dip was the basis of the movie "Mississippi Burning" if memory serves correctly...

This song was written in memory of Michael Mickey Schwerner, a fellow college student and civil rights activist, who was slain in 1964 by the Ku Klux Klan along with two other people.
