Great live show at the Southwell festival last weekend. Superb performance, lots of spine tingling moments. Show of Hands are one the best live acts I have seen and one of the most underated bands in the UK.

In the US these are a subset of "bedroom communities" - too far out to be suburbs, quaint pastoral scenes, but all the real estate is now pricey, and most of the barns are just for show.

My life story. An antidote to those privileged clowns that used to " represent" the countryside in those marches a few years back.

I have to say I don’t really relate to the issue this song is talking about. The last bit about big agri-business vs. the family farm, yes, but not the whole vacationers’ vision of country life thing. Maybe it’s an England issue.

Sorry for sounding a bit arsey there :) I see your point - I guess as someone from the country who's still got a lot of family and friends there and knows people whose livelihoods rely on it I can get a bit over-defensive. I guess your point is true in some parts of the country, but there are others (such as Herefordshire, where I'm from) where agriculture is still the main industry, and where the majority rather than the minority live in rural areas. Admittedly I've left and now live in an urban area, but it saddens me to see people being priced out of areas they've grown up and and where their families are from because a banker wants a weekend home with a nice view, even if no-one's there during the week. Another complaint is that when farmers try to operate in a more efficient and up to date way (eg poly-tunnels) people with this 'nimby'-ish attitude will complain about it spoiling the view without considering that as well as looking nice the landscape is also someone's way of life

Kind of completely missed the point, the countryside isn't just there to look pretty (though tourism is a key industry in many places), they're arguing against people making an idyll of it and expecting it to remain perfect and unspoilt when there's a lot of people who need to make their living from it. I'd check out a documentary called "The Lie of The Land" that was on Channel 4 a couple of years ago if you can find it, it follows a similar theme and explains this sort of thing better than I can!
