I really hate this pointless Motown vs Stax battle. Both labels are amazing and have contributed a LOT to Afro-American music, as well as popular music in general. Both labels have their own sound. I would tend to prefer Motown over Stax but that's only a matter of taste. I don't say it's better. It's the same for people who claim Stax is better. When I read Motown is lightweight, I really can't believe it. With such extremely talented songwriters, producers and singers, I don't see how this music can be lightweighted. Smoother, yes but it's in the DNA of Motown as much as ruggedness is in the DNA of Stax. Both labels were authentic to what the music they wanted to convey: the sound of a New America. I'm so glad we have Motown AND Stax, two of the finest representations of Soul music ever.

Stax rocks - and Motown was lightweight.

Re: motown vs Stax - Yes this is Stax, but a LOT of people identify this sound as "motown", although the Motown label was, well, motown. Stax had different artists, was in a different city, and had a somewhat different sound. While Motown artists were very controlled by the label in the production of their albums (backup singers, horns, etc) Stax was more flexible, and the sound from one artist to the next was distinct.
