Richard Ashcroft est né le 11 septembre 1971, à Billinge, coin paumé du Nord de l’Angleterre. Son père meurt alors qu’il est encore enfant et sa mère se remarie avec un homme, ancien membre d’une secte spécialisée dans le développement spirituel.
Lorsqu’il entre au collège Winstanley, il rencontre Simon Jones, Pete Salisbury et Nick McCabe. Ensemble ils formeront le groupe The Verve, dont il sera le chanteur. C’est grâce au tube Bittersweet symphony (1997) sur l’album Urban Hymns que le groupe prendra une dimension mondiale. Le groupe se sépare en 1999, en grande partie à cause de disputes incessantes entre Nick McCabe et Richard Ashcroft.
Richard commence sa carrière solo en 2000 avec l’album Alone with Everybody, qui devient rapidement un succès. Il enchaîne ensuite avec un second album en 2002 : Human Conditions, sur lequel il convie notamment Pete Salisbury, son ancien compère de The Verve. Enfin son dernier album est Keys to the World, sorti en 2006 et dont le sigle Break the Night with Color a très bien fonctionné.

I hope he'll be wise enough to leave aside the remixes and just incude the "real" songs. They're all too good not to deserve a proper CD release. Precious Stone, Leave Me High, Could Be A Country Thing, The Miracle, Get Up Now, Don't Take Me In, 75 Degrees, .... all good stuff.

Im sorry but none of his stuff comes anywhere near what hes done before. he cant make good music without nick mccabe as he is an awesome guitarist. also ashcrofts best piece of solo work was done in a northern soul and what is his second most popular song on this was written during verve years. and any verve fan knows that urban hymns is the worst of the three albums before the break up in 98
