    • Concert Review: Hayes Carll with Jason Isbell and Shovels and Rope, April 23, Boston

      5 mai 2011, 3h11m par Rockstar_Aimz

Sat 23 Apr – Hayes Carll / Jason Isbell

From my blog: My Aimz is True

About a minute into Hayes Carll's first song Chances Are a big cheer erupted from the crowd. No, the crowd wasn't cheering for the protagonist in this heartfelt ballad. They were celebrating the fact that the Boston Bruins had just beaten the Montreal Canadians in double overtime. For a second there I thought I was back in Canada, but then I remembered that the Leafs never make the playoffs. I hope the Texans on the stage weren't confused either. Welcome to Boston!

Carll headlined the sold out gig on Saturday, April 23, at the Brighton Music Hall in Boston, playing all but one song from his tremendous 2011 album KMAG YOYO (And Other American Stories), and other great tunes from his back catalog. (The one song he didn't play from the new album was a Christmas song, which really didn't fit on the day before Easter).

After the warm up ballad, Carll and his band dug into the country rock with Hard Out Here and It's A Shame…

    • Craponne in short

      27 jui. 2010, 16h13m par Sacha72

Fri 23 Jul – 23eme Festival Country Rendez Vous 2010

      I can be short.

      It was cold.

      ...
      ..
      .

Okay. I'll be a bit less short on this festival.

There was NO red dirt music. None at all. Zero.
      The audience was grumpy.
And they had Heineken on draft.

      Hm. Something on the artists?

I've seen Ray Wylie Hubbard. And his son. And they were GOOOOOD!!!

      Happy Sacha.

      That's mostly it.

I've seen Ray Wylie Hubbard. And his son.

Oh, okay: Robert Earl Keen was there too.

Don't feel like talking about the other artists. It's not their fault. The line-up just really sucked. And I don't buy the story on a low budget because of less Government funding this year. I'd say that 15,000 visitors with an average entrance fee of EUR 100,= plus the bar income ánd the stand-holders-fees would count for something. Right?

But hey: I've seen Ray Wylie Hubbard. Have I mentioned that already?

      Sacha.

    • On The Chase: Good, Free, and Legal- Episode 9, SXSW and American Songwriter

      18 mars 2010, 22h19m par udizzle

I do not have much to say about these artists with the exception of, "Hey, it's free." There is bound to be some good stuff on one or all of these offerings, but I have not had the chance to listen to either to tell you what is good. You need to have iTunes installed for two of these offerings.

      SXSW
First, we have NPR's free offering of some of the SXSW bands for this year. Go to http://tinyurl.com/yclqnt3 for details on how to download. The tracks on this offering are as follows:

      Written in Reverse by Spoon
The High Road by Broken Bells
I Learned The Hard Way by Sharon Jones And The Dap Kings
      Canadian Girl by Canadian Girl
Girl In Love by Smith Westerns
      Airplanes by Local Natives
      Everywhere I Go by G-Side
      Cleo's Song by JBM
Achille's Heel: IV. Shur Landing by Brooklyn Rider
      Hannah by Freelance Whales
      Swim by Surfer Blood

If for no other reason, it is worth it alone for the Sharon Jones And The Dap Kings. Enjoy!

    • Kerrville 2009

      22 avr. 2009, 1h53m par jcshepard

      http://www.kerrvillefolkfestival.com/posters/2000.jpg

I've not yet been to Kerrville (in fact it's been a few years since I've set foot in the Republic of Texas), but I usually like the folks who like Kerrville. In fact, a local concert organizer here in Greater Minnesota recruits almost exclusively from artists on the Kerrville card. PR says the card is set:
The Kerrville Folk Festival at Quiet Valley Ranch, nine miles south of the Texas Hill Country resort community Kerrville, announces an exciting 2009 festival schedule for its 38th annual event. Once again this legendary songwriter's festival will run for 18 straight days, from Thursday, May 21 through Sunday, June 7, 2009. The entire weekend of May 29 - 31 will be broadcast live on Sirius XM Radio, The Village (XM 15), hosted by Mary Sue Twohy. For information and tickets please go to www.kerrvillefolkfestival.com.
The (yes) 18-day lineup for 2009 is an interesting mix of folks I like, folks I'd like to try, and alot of others of whom I just got no idea. …

    • Viva Variety!

      3 nov. 2007, 14h29m par RandyB1961

I've seen several variations on this exercise, so I thought I'd try one:

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

Here is my list of unique artists:

      Bruce Springsteen
      Jackson Browne
      Van Morrison
      Neil Young
      Bob Dylan
      Paul Simon
      Tom Petty
      Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
      Townes Van Zandt
      Rodney Crowell
      Joe Ely
      Jerry Jeff Walker
