Most underrated R.E.M. album [3]. It 1 hour+ but you just follow it along.

I must have been 9 or something when this came out. I remember. I didn't really like it, though.

I think the problem this album's reputation has had is the lead track and first single, How the West was Won and Where It Got Us isn't one of their best. E-Bow The Letter, although a good song, was a poor choice for an opening single, too sombre and moody, and naturally it dropped out of the charts like a stone. Ever since then we've been having to explain that no, it's actually a really good album :(

I really like this album. It wears experimentation on its sleeve and has no problem following it where it might lead.

disagree... this album has a few amazing songs, but the rest of it feels like ideas gone stale... the strangeness of 'Up' is way more fresh.

The album cover is perfect. This music sounds like movement.

I bought this in 1997 or '98. Didn't care too much for it. I realized in 2012 that it's their best album, and "Leave" and "Electrolite" are two of the best songs R.E.M. ever wrote.

The last great one they did, but I hesitate in ranking it with their very best. Whenever it gets remastered they should give the tracks recorded live better clarity and it'll really be killer. There's some interesting instrumentation that's completely hidden from the ears unless you really beef up your equalizer treble.

In many ways this album prefigured 'Up' some electronica sounds that were used in 'New Test leper' for example, later reappeared in Up songs like Walk Unafraid, Sad Professor... Critics have described this album as 'transitional' and I agree, for it marks a shift in sounds from organic (i.e. Automatic) to synthetic (i.e. Reveal) albums

Who rates this album poorly? Overlooked and underrated aren't the same thing.

One of their best (if not the best) that's for sure. So Fast, So Numb, Leave and How The West Was Won And Where It Got Us are simply amazing. Pure gold. This album has that specific sound that makes me love it much more than every other R.E.M. album (although I love them all except Around The Sun).

It's under-rated because it's just always discarded for the popular 'Automatic for the People' and 'Out of Time' albums (look at their listener numbers). Also my favourite R.E.M. album.
