Paula Cole est une chanteuse et pianiste américaine née le 5 avril 1968 à Rockport, petite ville du Massachusetts. Elle écrit et compose tous ses morceaux.

Sa carrière internationale commence alors qu’elle est choisie comme choriste par Peter Gabriel pour la tournée mondiale suivant la sortie de l’album Us en 1992. Cette tournée, intitulée Secret World Live et répartie sur les années 1992 et 1993, est elle-même accompagnée par un album, une cassette VHS et, plus tard, un DVD.

L’enregistrement en public à Modène, Italie, permet à Paula Cole de se faire remarquer par la pureté et la puissance de sa voix. Peu de temps après, elle se lance dans l’écriture d’un premier album personnel intitulé Harbinger, qui ne se vendra réellement qu’après la sortie de son second opus, This Fire, en 1996. Elle réalise ce second album avec des moyens tout aussi réduits que le premier, l’enregistrant dans son appartement. On retrouve, au sein du personnel, le bassiste Tony Levin, déjà présent sur la tournée Secret World Live ainsi que sur tous les albums de Peter Gabriel.

Trois morceaux assurent le succès critique et commercial de l’album. Le premier, Where Have all the Cowboys Gone, sort en single aux États-Unis où il se vend très bien. Le ton est résolument ironique et anti-machiste, Paula Cole raillant la relation homme-femme telle qu’elle est traditionnellement inscrite dans la culture populaire occidentale : l’homme au travail, la femme au foyer. La narratrice se demande « où sont passés tous les cowboys » et, par extension, le romantisme et son image de l’homme protecteur.

    Paula was also the only female to be nominated for producer of the year... I mean her list of achievements is endless, she has a 5+ octave range and is the best singer and songwriter I think I've ever heard. Looking at Zar-Unity's taste it's so generic. Hilary Duff and Mandy Moore, you can enjoy THAT but you are clueless on music of a high caliber or who has pipes. Can't believe this guy is serious

    Not a fair comparison at all but Paula beats Sarah to pieces if we're talking about who has more flavor, style... who is more eclectic. Can Sarah beatbox, has she sang any soul or R&B songs... answer to all is no and really Paula is a FAR superior writer. Who was on tour with Peter Gabriel, a true legend by the time she was 25. Oh also Paula... Sarah McLachlan is talented but as 'vanilla' as it gets, Paula is the baskin robins 31 flavors. In short she's the shit and Zar-Unity is judgmental and obviously not very educated on Paula's music (and most likely not any music in general.)

    I recently got a car with a tape-deck and This Fire was one of the few tapes I still had from when I was a kid. I was surprised by how good it is.

    I'd rank it 3rd after Ithaca and Amen but what do I know. I'm crazy to think Paula actually got better and did a wider spectrum of things more skillfully as the years have gone on, I guess. (For where she was in her life at the time I'd call This Fire perfect, I actually rank all 3 albums I mentioned Perfect 10's)

    Paula once told me towards the end of a conversation I was smart and that sticks with me to this day. She also said I'm "amazing" when I typed in a few questions to an interview she was doing some months back. I wish I could find more artists or people in general that I feel the same way about *sigh*
