Patti Smith fut élevée dans le New Jersey et s’intéressa très tôt à la musique, écoutant les Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown etc. D’abord tournée vers la poésie, son premier enregistrement important fut une version d’un poème de Jim Morrison sur un album solo de Ray Manzarek. Regroupés dans trois anthologies (Seventh Heaven, Kodak et Witt), ses premiers poèmes sont marqués par les influences d’Arthur Rimbaud et de William Burroughs. Au cours des années 70, elle fut progressivement amenée à faire fusionner de tels écrits avec son expérience du rock. En 1971, elle donna ainsi une lecture à l’église St Mark, accompagnée à la guitare par Lenny Kaye; cette liaison informelle se poursuivit pendant trois ans, le duo fut rejoint par Richard Sohl (piano) pour former le premier Patti Smith Group. Leur premier disque, « Hey Joe » / « Piss Factory », fut en partie financé par le photographe Robert Mapplethorpe.

En 1974, le groupe devint l’un des plus appréciés du club CBGB de New York. Augmenté de deux musiciens, Ivan Krall (basse) et J.D. Daugherty (percussions), il publia son premier album, Horses, en 1975 suivi en 1976 par Radio Ethiopia ; mais cet album fut perçu comme « self-indulgent », et la carrière de Patti Smith connut un coup dur lorsqu’elle se brisa la nuque en tombant sur scène, au début de l’année 1977. Après une longue récupération, Patti n’en donna pas moins une excellente série de concerts en juillet, et l’année suivante fut marquée par l’énorme succès commercial d’Easter (avec notamment « Because The Night », co-signé par Bruce Springsteen, qui entra dans le Top 5 britannique).

Oh my God. Just heard Land for the first time. I need to sit down.
