    i just begin to write a blog ,wich new preformers i (re)discover and how i like em ... and i try to discribe them with my bad english ;)
    but i think writing a blog just can make my english better :)

    i know Opeth more then 3 month...was on [event=]http://www.lastfm.de/event/1021139+Progressive+Nation+2009[/event] (leadband :Dream Theater ) and so saw opeth live ... but there i just wasn't so fascinated ...maybe it just was the bad acoustic at the concert :( ... and the boring fans ...but 2 weaks ago i fell in loved with windowpayne ... maybe just cause i begann to play guitar :) ...and even the deathmetal songs were much more intresiting..maybe cause i listen to lamb of god long time ... now i am a bit "harder" ...thats why i think^^ ... okay i think noby intrest this stupid shit .. but me was bored so^^ ... if somes is outthere who is intrestd fine :) if not ... then i just do some senseless shit ...like so often :) ... just wanna say sorry for my crappy english ...
    so i just like opeth cause i was/am on a real porcupine tree "trip" (about 600 plays in 2 month or sth like that ) and the album damnation ( very nice name " damn-nation" :D i think they mean that with it ... or is it just a "special expression" in english? just tell me (if u not fell asleep already^^) ...okay back to topic ... just love the album ...its so " porcupine-tree" like ... just epic ...and they acoustic guitar riffs are so *take a look in the dictionary*...imaginative (hehe i love dictionaries) ...their "heavier" songs are (like i said) good too ... i love this change of heavy,brutal,fast, slamming parts and the calm,melancholic,romantic parts ... a bit simular too System of a Down ...(they were my favorite band for about 2 years! ^^

    ... hmm i think that was it ... thank u for not being intresed in this :)
  • Opeth

    21 nov. 2009, 5h01m par valerauko

    Tuesday, the seventeenth of november in year 2009, from evening seven o'clock Opeth played a fantastic concert in Shibuya O-East, Tokyo. They played for two great hours. I can't list all the songs in the setlist, but they mostly played songs i knew, with a few from the older records i'm not so familiar with. Not only the music was great, as expected from (in my opinion) one of the best active bands, but between songs Åkerfeldt's hilarious comments made everyone laugh too. (It turned out Opeth renamed themselves Swedish manboobs, i'll have to re-tag my mp3 library.) I missed a few songs, to be exact two, Hessian Peel (i'd love to hear the backward singing part live) (which is a totally absurd wish, but still) and ÉcouterFace of Melinda (i'm in love with its live record from The Roundhouse Tapes). Still, it was a great gig (in the sky Shibuya), worth it all. I hope they'll be coming back to Japan when they do a new album, or i'll be at home when they tour Hungary…

  • 3rd Last FM Birthday

    20 nov. 2009, 22h18m par McMartin06

    Intro

    Well, a few days ago I realised it was my 3rd anniversary. Unfortunately, it was my 3rd birthday back on the 9th October. So, in true Martinesque fashion this journal is well over a month late. So I apologise for this very late journal, hopefully the content is worth the wait.

    My 3rd Year

    It’s been a bit of a funny old year really. I am sure I haven’t bought as many albums as I had this time last year. Were as last year, I was largely filling in the gaps of my music collection, this year almost all of my purchases have been new artists (except from a few new releases from bands already on my ipod). This seems to have largely been based around my attendance to a few gigs and trying to get as much of the bands back catalogue as possible both before and after the gigs. As well as new artists been added to my charts, there has been some movement in amongst my charts for the more established artists. From about 6 downwards, there has been movement. The top 5 still remains, but below there has been major movement which is an encouraging sign. The top 5 looks like it could finally get broken in the near future too. I feel this is last year’s purchases taking effect which have established some artists into higher positions.

    The Gigs

    Well since October last year, I have been to some cracking gigs. My first of that period was Priest Feast back in February of this year, were I saw Judas Priest, Megadeth and Testament. Now I had seen Megadeth before and was quite familiar with they’re material (see my charts ;-)) but I hadn’t had the pleasure of seeing Judas Priest or Testament or hearing they’re material. I checked both bands material and frankly both of them were very good. Testament were my favourite of the two though, but I must say that Judas Priest were the best of the bunch live. I have bought almost of each bands material now, which just demonstrates how gigs are a great way of finding great music.

    My next gig was in April, with The Prodigy supported by Dizzee Rascal playing at Sheffield. I knew all of The Prodigy material however wasn’t expecting much of Dizzee Rascal and wasn’t intending to check out his material. But despite my low expectations for the bloke, he was brilliant. He had so much energy and he pulled off the beats brilliantly. In fact the whole venue was rocking, including myself! Despite Dizzee Rascal been somewhat of a positive surprise, The Prodigy would truly blow me away. They were absolutely phenomenal and remain the best act I have ever seen. They were so intense and I think I must have lost about a pint in sweat! I came out absolutely fucked and was still fucked in the morning.

    The next gig was Progressive Nation in October. This was a good gig, but it wasn’t as good as it could have been. Despite me boning up on some Opeth, the majority of their set was from other albums. The same problem happened with Dream Theater, though this time it was even worse as I actually owned quite a few of their albums, yet they still barely played any material from them! Very disappointing, but just bad luck I suppose.

    As a result of these gigs, I have checked out some quality bands who will make an impact on my charts within the next year or two. I am going to see Rammstein next year too, so I am checking out they’re material as we speak :-)

    Hip-Hop: A Youtube Phenomenon?

    One of the more bizarre events of this last year on Last FM was my “discovery” of Hip Hop via You Tube. Don’t ask me why, but one day I decided I would check out some Hip Hop/Rap on You Tube. I was at work and was a little bored. I decided rather than spend my time browsing the internet; I would design a signature for another site I post on. I started having a go, but couldn’t concentrate. I needed some music, but unfortunately my ITunes library at work was out of action. So I turned to You Tube and sat they’re thinking what I could listen to. I didn’t want to listen to rock/metal, I wanted something different or maybe something I hadn’t heard before. In the end, I thought of what was the opposite of metal. In a split second I thought Rap and decided to check some out. I instantly thought of Wu Tang Clan because I had heard ÉcouterGravel Pit a few times and kinda liked it. That was the beginning of the end and I started checking out other Wu Tang Clan stuff. In a strange way, it helped me concentrate; I could appreciate the intelligent word play as well as the subtle beats in the background. Amongst my favourites of Wu Tang Clan were ÉcouterProtect Ya Neck, ÉcouterDa Mystery of Chessboxin' and ÉcouterTriumph. I then checked out some N.W.A, BodyCount and some Skee-Lo. So, for a genre I once hated, I discovered stuff I liked within a week. I haven’t bought any Hip Hop stuff, but it’s certainly a genre I would want to check out in future. So, watch this space guys!

    Stats

    As with the last “Last FM Birthday” journal I will analyse my top 10 and what’s happened well since last October/November within my top 10.

    1. Megadeth

    Overall Plays – 4,312
    Plays Since Last Birthday – 1,193
    Summary
    – Still top by a comfortable margin and frankly not much has changed. A new album gave these guys a boost but I think by and large these guys are living off the sheer amount of material I have of theirs already. They’re large discography allows them to have a heavy presence in the shuffles I play, so it’s certainly going to be a long time before these guys from the top spot. Not saying they are not a great band, but I have been listening to them a while and I am not as much of a fan boy as I used to be.

    2. Iron Maiden

    Overall Plays – 3,658
    Plays Since Last Birthday – 1,078
    Summary
    – Much the same as the Megadeth situation really. No new material for a while now and I say they are less likely to release new material than Megadeth are. Iron Maiden are, unsurprisingly, another non mover.

    3. Red Hot Chilli Peppers

    Overall Plays – 2,981
    Plays Since Last Birthday – 862
    Summary
    – Yet another band who have “stagnated” really. A new album is supposedly on its way. But I can’t see it making enough impact to move the RHCP’s into the top two. The only way is down really, especially as I have been listening to them even longer than I have Iron Maiden or Megadeth.

    4. Led Zeppelin

    Overall Plays – 2,445
    Plays Since Last Birthday – 779
    Summary
    – A band that I hold in higher esteem than RHCP’s but not Iron Maiden or Megadeth. I have by and large got they’re material except the odd live album and session album which I would be interested in. Unfortunately that’s not going to happen, because frankly I want to concentrate on either new bands or artists near the bottom of my charts who have little material. Another band I expect to go downhill in my charts, despite the new material I feel this will be of minimal impact.

    5. Thin Lizzy

    Overall Plays – 1,984
    Plays Since Last Birthday – 586
    Summary
    – Man o man, I cannot remember the last time I bought an album by these guys. A cracking rock band too. Despite been one of the more established artists in my charts, I still have plenty of material to purchase of theirs. I am very surprised they are still in the same place in my charts to be honest, they are obviously still relying by and large on the plays from the double disc greatest hits album I bought ages ago. Expect them to maybe fall before making a rise again once I get more material.

    6. Madness

    Overall Plays – 1,836
    Plays Since Last Birthday – 791
    Summary
    – A great year for these guys, they have moved up three places in my charts. They even have had more plays in the last 12 months than both Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy. Frankly it’s deserved after they have released what must be one of the albums of 2009 in Liberty of Norton Folgate. I still have plenty of material to check out and they are looking increasingly likely to be the first band to break the “big five”.

    7. Jimi Hendrix

    Overall Plays – 1,832
    Plays Since Last Birthday – 741
    Summary
    – Hot on heels of Madness, Jimi Hendrix is another artist that will break into the top five in my opinion. The man is an absolute genius and produces music that is simply out of this world. I still have a few more albums to purchase of his and like Madness, he has had more more plays in the last 12 months than Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy.

    8. Black Sabbath

    Overall Plays – 1,783
    Plays Since Last Birthday – 505
    Summary
    – A terrible 12 months for Black Sabbath. They have dropped like a stone by two places and could drop even further. However, like Thin Lizzy, there is hope. I do not own the majority of their albums, so hopefully they guys might “recover” if you like. Black Sabbath are another band who have been riding high on a greatest hits package and a few albums, only for the plays to dry up as other bands have developed and they haven’t. In fact, they are only rated 22nd out of 36 bands with regards to plays for the last 12 months. I think that tells its own story.

    9. The Prodigy

    Overall Plays– 1,761
    Plays Since Last Birthday – 835
    Summary
    – Well, the electro punks have finally gate crashed the party. I can’t think of many bands that I rate higher right now. The wall of noise they produce is downright astonishing and they are certainly trailblazers in my charts. They are the only electronica band in my charts and for them to even reach the top 10 is fantastic. They’re live show is fantastic and they’re new album is a return to form. I must say the amount of brilliant b-sides which I downloaded from ITunes recently won’t exactly have hindered they’re progression. Expect them to overtake Black Sabbath.

    10. Electric Light Orchestra

    Overall Plays – 1,703
    Plays Since Last Birthday - 724
    Summary
    – Certainly the nicest band in my top ten, and I can’t help feeling they’re feeling the benefit of been great revising music. But, let’s not take anything away from them. They make lush, layered, progressive rock music. They are innovators and they’re whole sound fits in well together. It helps having a cracking front man and songwriter in Jeff Lynne too. They have produced classic albums and I have barely scratched the service with these guys really. Potentially another band who could find themselves moving up my charts.

    Conclusion

    Boy, I never realised what an interesting year on Last FM it has been until I actually sat down and thought about it. It’s been a nice surprise really, rather than simply filling in gaps in my music collection I have found myself integrating new bands into my music library. This is down to the gigs mainly, which have forced me to discover some cracking music. Judas Priest, Testament and Opethall have exciting futures ahead of them in my charts. I am checking out Rammstein as we speak because I am seeing them in February, which should be cool. While I am in the mode of checking out new stuff, I thought I might as well action some recommendations that Stubbsy67 gave me aaaggeesss ago - Machinae Supremacy and Soulcage. So do not despair Shaun, I have been listening ;-) So another exciting year of music beckons and frankly I can’t wait to get my teeth into it. Keep your eyes peeled for my next journal by the way, which will be my top 10 album discoveries of 2009.

    Hope you enjoyed reading this journal, your comments would be much appreciated :-)
  • Metal orthodoxy and why I like it

    20 nov. 2009, 16h11m par dark_legions

    Now that The Onion has published a list of the "best" metal of the decade, we can demonstrate why metal orthodoxy exists: it's designed to keep metal from being assimilated, or taken on by the larger genre of popular music as a style without ideas of its own.

    People who have no important role in life like to claim to be different, unique and ironic. It's basic psychology: you'd like to be unique, but you're just a cog. So instead you become the cog who's also different. And to do that, you have to smash orthodoxy everywhere.

    Most people like to mock and jeer at metal orthodoxy, and I admit I have fallen into this trap in the past, but now I see why it exists -- and I agree with it. Keep metal metal, not another flavor of rock, like how corporations buy up a small brand and then use it as a label to stick on the same old stuff, with artificial flavoring to make it seem "unique."

    In (unpopular) defense of metal orthodoxy...

    Bands in the list:

    * Opeth
    * Meshuggah
    * Boris
    * Isis
    * Baroness
    * Agoraphobic Nosebleed
    * Deftones
    * Mastodon
    * Pelican
    * Slayer

  • The 100 Most Essential Albums of the Decade - Volume I

    19 nov. 2009, 8h28m par DreadfulYgg

    I stole this idea from a metalzine website (metalreview.com), and like them I will be going over all the albums that I know which I deem as must haves for this first decade of the 21st century. I was just going to do metal but decided to open it up to other types of music too, although I will say that the majority of the albums are still within the metal genre simply because I know it better than everything else. The only rule here is that there is no more than one album per band. EPs and demos were fair game for me also. I haven't ranked any of these so no need to complain about a certain album being higher than another. Enjoy.

    Decapitated- Winds of Creation

    The debut album from these insanely talented Polish guys, who were all extremely young when they recorded this, is a modern death metal classic. I think the thing that really makes this album stand out is the thick as cement guitar tone, inventive riffs, and near flawless drumming of the late Vitek. They came out of the gate with something to prove and forever made their stamp in the ever growing death metal scene.

    Extol- Undeceived

    An obscure band, even for the metal undeground, Extol were ever changing during their career and this album (while unlike any of their other albums) is their best effort. Their sound is a blend of death metal, progressive metal, even a bit of black metal. Their songwriting has no method at all and that's a good thing. They do things their way and end up sounding like no one else in the metal scene.

    In Flames- Clayman

    Ah, this is what In Flames is all about. Those sweet, melodic, harmonious guitars. Not only is this one of their best albums, it's the perfect album for new fans to start with and get themselves into the melodic death metal genre. The songwriting is practically flawless. Unfortunately, In Flames took a bit of a nosedive immediately after this work of theirs. They're just not the same.

    Morbid Angel- Gateways to Annihilation

    Given the grandeur of their earliest works, it seems this later effort of the death metal gods is often forgotten. That's a shame, because this release exudes confidence that only a veteran band can show. The guitar sound on this album has the thickness of sludge and Steve Tucker’s vocals are extremely befitting of the assault that Morbid Angel were going for at this point in their career, and will likely remain their last great album.

    Nevermore- This Godless Endeavor

    This appears to be the last Nevermore album of this decade, and it’s been five years since its release. When the new album is released is uncertain, but what is certain is that this remains maybe the best in their quality catalogue of work. The bar was raised extremely high on this album and they managed to blow everyone away upon its arrival. It essentially combines all the band’s best attributes into one mind blowing 57 minute journey.

    Nightwish- Wishmaster

    You better believe Nightwish have made this list. Like it or not, what the band does they do well. Tarja’s soprano vocals never sounded better than she did on this third release for the band, and the production is sheer perfection, bringing out the entire band the way they were meant to sound. Tuomas’ creative juices were working overtime and some of the best songs the band has written to date are on this album. The title track, ‘Wishmaster’, remains a staple in all their live shows.

    Opeth- Blackwater Park

    I can’t tell you how difficult it was just choosing one Opeth album. All of Opeth’s recent albums easily deserve a spot on this list, but I feel that Blackwater Park perfectly encapsulates what this band is about more so than any release of theirs this decade. Simply put, the band is firing on all cylinders here, with just about every single song on the album becoming a masterpiece in its own right. This is about as close to perfection as albums get.

    Anaal Nathrakh- The Codex Necro

    Absolute chaos is what this debut is all about from the industrial/grindcore influenced black metal of Anaal Nathrakh. This will test the tolerance of your ears and you will either relish in every second or run away in terror. The vocals are incomprehensible and ugly. The guitars buzz with malevolence and the drums pound your ears into dust. I think a lyric from one song perfectly sums up the response you should have listening, and that is “Down on your knees!”

    …And Oceans- A.M.G.O.D.

    One of the best mixtures of music that I’ve yet to hear, …and Oceans seemingly perfected the art of integrating electronics into their brand of black metal. There are hooks galore, especially on the infamous “Tears Have No Name”, and the guitars move forward with reckless abandon. The best thing about this album though is the songwriting and how they pull all their influences together to make one tight and cohesive work of experimental black metal.

    Ensiferum- s/t

    As debut albums go, this certainly ranks near the upper echelon of the crowd. While this band has always put out great material, they’ve never quite matched the power of this first album. There are so many standout tracks that it’s almost ridiculous a new band can have this much creativity and songwriting skills. Even today, this stands as one of the best folk metal albums and I don’t see it being shoved aside in the future.

    Lost Horizon- Awakening the World

    By the metal gods, what is this band? From out of nowhere, this band called Lost Horizon delivers one of the great power metal albums of all time, led by the immortal vocal talents of Daniel Heiman. This band is bursting with vibrant energy and their performances reflect their obvious enthusiasm for the metal. They understand that at its roots, it’s about fun and this is as good a traditional metal album you’re bound to find anywhere and anytime.

    Summoning- Oath Bound

    One of the truly original and unique bands in metal has always been Summoning. Even within the constraints of black metal, they have found a way to make a name for themselves, and an epic one at that. This is perhaps the best work they’ve ever put forth. The kinds of emotions evoked are many and they all touch the soul equally. To experience Summoning is to experience art in music form.

    Windir- 1184

    When one thinks of tragedy within metal, it’s hard not to think of the heartbreaking and somehow almost appropriate death of Windir’s Valfar. He died in the midst of a blizzard, and given the icy feel of Windir’s music on 1184, it’s rather ironic. Nevertheless, this album is one of few that can go toe to toe with just about any album you can think of and annihilate it in terms of its success. Perfect songwriting, memorable melodies, and passionate vocals…this is Windir’s magnum opus.

    Agalloch- The Mantle

    There are few bands in music today that have a perfect track record and Agalloch is one of them. This, their second release, is no less amazing than any of their other works. In fact, each of their albums ranks as some of the best material to ever spew forth from the metal scene. But on The Mantle, Agalloch perfected their already perfected sound by adding in elements from post-rock and a more doom-filled atmosphere. The only other thing I can say is, this is on many “Favorite albums of all-time” (including mine) lists for good reason.

    Bloodbath- Resurrection Through Carnage

    A glorious ode to the sounds of yore, Bloodbath resurrected the Swedish death metal assault of bands like Entombed and Dismember with this debut album and impressed many with their flawless execution. One might believe this album was a lost gem from the early 90s if not for the production clarity. Did I mention Mikael Akerfeldt sounds more brutal here than ever in his career? That’s saying a lot.

    Dark Tranquillity- Damage Done

    Without a doubt, Dark Tranquillity are the longest enduring band of the melodic death metal scene from the early 90s, and have long surpassed In Flames in terms of consistent quality across their entire career. While their mid-era albums saw more experimentation, Damage Done is a revitalization of sorts where they found their current calling. Damage Done succeeds with a kind of charm that I can’t explain. Perhaps it’s Stanne’s particular vocal styling on this album, or perfect melding of electronic elements the band introduced? All I know is that this is one album that will stick with you.

    Darkspace- Dark Space III

    Much like Negură Bunget, Darkspace are at the forefront of black metal in terms of progressing the genre in ways previously unexplored. Unlike Negură, Darkspace are the current masters of ambient black metal, taking their influence from the vast blackness of the universe. The atmosphere is so rich and otherworldly that the band becomes hypnotic in their unforgiving performances that defy what makes music usually work. Minimalism is the name of the game and Darkspace utilize it masterfully.

    Immortal- Sons of Northern Darkness

    Immortal were always considered a classic band due to their involvement in the burgeoning black metal scene in Norway in the early 90s, but after At the Heart of Winter was released, I think everyone was taken by surprise. This album picks up the pieces that were laid out for that album and arranges them into easily one of the best black metal albums of the decade. The production is frigid and even with the crystal clear sound the band’s brutality and grimness comes just as well as any time before. This album proved why these guys truly are the “Sons of Northern Darkness.”

    Negură Bunget- Om

    I’m not sure any band has taken the concept of progressive black metal to the heights that Negură has on their latest and greatest effort, Om. To even attempt to analyze this beast of an album is to realize your own mortality. In just the three years it’s been out, I feel this to me a monumental album in the black metal genre and one that will influence many bands in the future, though I doubt any will conquer a style like this in the way Negură has here.

    Nile- In Their Darkened Shrines

    As great as Annihilation of the Wicked is, In Their Darkened Shrines is Nile’s best work thus far for a couple reasons. For one, I’ve never heard a death metal album have this much atmosphere. It captures the Egyptian feel better than any work from the band. Also, the songwriting is extremely focused on this album and there are many standout tracks. No matter how you take in this album, the fact that it’s a masterpiece rings loud and clear.

    Well, that's just the first of five volumes that I'll be assembling before the year is up, which means there's still 80 albums to go if you were counting. It might take me awhile before I get all five up because of school and work. So keep checking back periodically to see the rest of the list.
