Sure, I could listen to pop songs (and sometimes I actually do just that). But to make music more than just nice-to-listen-to, you need emotion. Sure, that could be positive emotions (and sometimes, I actually like positive songs). But to make a song truly stick, it needs a negative emotion.
Just look at my listenings. The top is filled with bands that have an emotional sound, a negative emotion that is. Bands like Defeater
, More Than Life
, Shai Hulud
, Carry On
, American Nightmare
and last, but most definately not least: I Hate Myself
. Fine examples of bands you could call a lot of things, but cheerfull is not one of them.
All of these bands play a loud kind off music, hardcore
oriented, that do know how to put some melancholy into their sound. There are two exceptions in my top artists though.
The first ugly duckling would be Tiger Lou
. His music started out quite balanced, but it just grew darker and darker. Just watch the video for The loyal
and you will know why dark is the word of choice. …
